Genuine question... yes it’s about handguns :)

wow.....................insightful.
Very much so. Weight, capacity, reliability all favor Glock. 1911 has a bunch of things that snag/tear your clothes. If you have to use it to defend yourself do you want to lose $500 or $1000+.

1911 does engraved nickel plate with pearl grips better than Glock.

Am I the only 18 yr old who deeply desires to rock a 1911 style .45 ACP?

Or just individual in general, a lot of EDCs I see are Glocks and Sigs... just being curious.
I didn't read any other comments, but when I was 21 I had a hard on to carry nothing but a 1911 in .45. Nothing else would make me happy, full stop.

I bought a Colt combat commander that i carried for a few years, but I rarely carry it anymore. It's just damned heavy and low capacity. Nowadays I carry a Glock 26 most of the time. 21 year old me would barf, twice. Once for Glock and once for 9mm.

Wanna get rid of it? Lol. It’s good to hear some similarities... I’m looking at 9mm right now but 1911 will likely always have a place in my heart...

Well, I do still love it for a multitude of reasons. So, no.

So hell, I guess what I'm saying is get the 1911 and carry it. When your back gets tired get some plastic fantastic and appreciate them both!

I can't think of any reason or occasion to choose to carry a 1911 over a Glock. Maybe a pimp convention.
I’d open carry a 1911 rather than a Glock, Sig or CZ to meet the Governor or Lieutenant Governor, oh wait you covered that.

The .45acp is a slow fat old round and from a 110 year old 1911 platform is even more archaic ... and I must be archaic too because I love it! My 18 year old kid wants β€œhis ownβ€œ 1911 also (he wants a full size TRP) and once he gets our sheriff’s β€œpistol permission slip” I will try and help him find one private party wise.

Just beware ... while some may not care for the 1911 others of us get hooked on them like Lays Potato Chips nobody can own just one ...
You got that right!!

And your young one is a smart cookie. TRP=awesome.

I understand lol, thanks!

In my late 20's my first pistol was a Kimber pro carry (aluminum frame, steel slide 4" barrel. Shot it, loved it. Used it in my concealed carry class. Several people asked if that was what I was going to actually carry, the instructor asked too and asked to shoot it after class.

It was my favorite, I was good with it and I trusted it.

I did carry it for several years. Then as Kimber's do it started doing weird things at around 3k rounds so I sold it after I lost trust. I then carried an M&P9c for the remainder.

This year I've switched it up and now carry a 4" S&W 686 lol.

So imo if you want to carry a 1911. Get one, get proficient, make sure your individual pistol is reliable and carry away.

Of course as a qualifier. I've always been a short, stocky guy and my off and on profession has been building so if I'm on the clock, I probably have my nail bag on. So wearing a heavy ccw pistol doesn't bother me in the least.

That and as to dimensions. I've never been super concerned (or cared) that I was printing.

This forum is FULL of knowledge. Stick around, ask questions, read threads. Learn and come to your own informed conclusions/decisions. What ever you pick to carry, get good with it and DO it.

Haven’t read all the advice or input, but:

The most important part of an EDC is that you actually carry. So pick something you actually are willing to clip on every day. If that is a full sized 1911, then rock on.

Many people, like myself, absolutely love 1911s, but choose not to carry them because my personal choice is smaller, lighter, and has twice the capacity. My carry pistol is a self defense tool. Not something I show off or really care too much about it’s aesthetics. The fact that I happen to like how it looks is tertiary to it being concealable, reliable, and accurate.

Great input, I have to OC as I’m 18 yrs old. And truly, it’s not even the others seeing it... it’s me loving the look lol. Thanks again for the words!

An instructor will tell you tell a specific firearm you need to carry ... a teacher will tell you carry what you shoot best and are most comfortable with. My Grandpa taught me to shoot a pistol with an old Browning Hi-Power and my Dad gave me his service Remington Rand when I moved out.

I have so much time behind the old single action semiautos that it’s second nature and real quick most experienced instructors realize that it’s so ingrained in me they don’t try. I have run the 1911 platform to the point I still try to thumb off the safety on Glocks. Yes, I can shoot other platforms well but under the worse circumstances I’d rather β€œrisk” the shortcomings some point out with the 1911 because I can run the thing like damn good. As said above training is key ... your life will depend on it if you ever do call on it be it a 1911, 686 or 19 ...

While I think they’re beautiful guns, the low capacity, old design (gun and ammo) and most importantly the size and weight is too much for me to carry.

I can carry a Glock 19 but if I’m not standing (sitting, bending, whatever) it’s a pain in the ass.

Yes, you’re able to carry big guns. The problem comes with carrying it everyday which is by far the most important factor. Will you want to strap it on when going to the grocery, gas station, take the dog out? I’d much rather carry a .32 ACP everyday than a .45 every other day.

Someone once said a .32 in your pocket is better than the .45 in your safe. I own both, I suggest you do the same.

Thank you very much.... great information and wisdom here.

I carry a Gov't model Colt easily in a leather IWB holster. It isn't that heavy with a real gunbelt. The holster holds it tight against my side, but unlike a Glock the rounded grip is easy to grab.

A G19 is higher capacity and lighter of course, but for some reason not very comfortable in any carry style I've tried.

1911 mags are far easier and more comfortable to conceal in a pocket or IWB carrier. Granted, with a G19 a spare mag is probably not as necessary.

For carry weight, just some data... A G19 and 3 loaded mags (46 rounds) weighs 3.2 pounds.
A Gov't model 1911 (.45) with 3 loaded mags (22-25 rounds) weighs 4 pounds.

Info party here, I appreciate this more than you know. Thanks for the input pal!

I find a 1911-A1 is a very nice carry weapon. Military proven! All Steel, no plastic! And if you need more that 7 rounds for defense you need to practice more.

I'm gonna catch hell for that last comment. :)

I may have a rather limited perception but I think the whole EDC issue has gone through several revolutions. Years and years of big, heavy sidearms and then the Shield hit the scene and changed the carry world. Probably the most popular "new" EDC for a long time, (something like 3 million sold quickly) now in it's second generation as M2.
And then most recently, Sig, Glock and Springfield changed the world again. P365, the Glock single stacks and now the Hellcat with more rounds than the venerable G26.
I own several 1911s from Gov't to Defenders and shoot them frequently, But as I get older, now in my 70s, my willingness to carry that much weight is very, very limited.
To the OP, love shoot and carry what you will, but don't be afraid to be flexible as needs change. The old popular adage, "if is not a .45, I'm not armed" or words to that effect, IMO are rather silly. And please overlook that I didn't mention revolvers anywhere, they're just not part of my reality.

very true. We’ve got to be able to adapt to each situation as responsible gun owners, and perhaps that includes changing your EDC to fit your needs. Thank you.

Ive been carrying since my early-mid 20's, and for the vast majority of that time Ive carried some variety of 1911.... either in 10mm or .45 ACP.

My most often holstered sidearm these days is a Colt Delta Elite in a Mad Max IWB holster, with two spare mags on my off side. Im often loading and unloading large quantities of feed, hay, and other good at my place of work, and before my time at my current place of employment, I actually kept armed at the store I worked at with a similar rig ( but they didnt know that...). And its comfortable.... but It took me a while to find a good setup.

Choose a firearm you run well.
Then choose the proper support gear for your daily carry needs.

Dont skimp on the support gear... dont run something you dont run well because someone else told you you "have to use this!"

A good, true gunbelt combined with a good holster makes a huge difference. No matter WHAT you carry.

Full disclosure, SOMETIMES I do carry other handguns... sometimes I'll carry my 329pd. Sometimes I even carry a Glock if the mood strikes me ( Or I have some other reason to do so)

But "Home" is a 1911, at least for myself.

I bought a Glock 17 as soon as they came on the market. (The tv news was still calling it the invisible gun.) I had a friend that was a die-hard 1911 man. He loved to talk about it. He had spent more on upgraded parts than I had in my Tupperware including bullets. He loved his I took a bunch of slack for my wonder nine but it kept on running.

I really wanted to love 1911's myself. I've owned two, and unfortunately, neither was 100% reliable. I found myself having far more failures than I was comfortable with, and in the end sold them.

These days I carry a j-frame 38 or a Ruger SR9c. The SR9 guns are polymer framed and striker fired, like a glock.

When it comes to all-metal semi autos, my favorite is the CZ-75. Every one I've fired has been very reliable and very accurate.

By no means an I crashing on the Glock, but the 1911... so beautiful lol
I mean, the 1911 is nice in a brutal sort of way, but if you want to use a truly beautiful handgun, try the Inox Beretta 92, Sphinx 2000, or Sig P232.

I've carried two 1911s in .45acp.....mine has a long slide to dig into my leg, and the shorter slide one just didn't work for me.
I still do carry my .45 occasionally, it's awesome....but heavy and huge to haul around on my person. Excellent to shoot, though.
At the moment, I'm back to carrying a G48. Easy to carry and conceal, and fun to shoot. Not near as sexy as a 1911, though!
You will carry many guns over the years, and have fun!

Who care what it looks like. Is it dependable, does it go bang every time you pull the trigger, do you have to spend a lot of money just to keep it running or is it plug and play.
You can train on a firearm till it becomes second nature, so the myth that there is some magical gun that will be perfect for you out of the box, is just that, a myth.
Get a reputable gun and use it.

With the right holster, you can walk around with most handguns fairly easily. Now sitting, driving, kneeling, laying down.... that's another story. Depends on your lifestyle imo.

0906191253.jpg1911 pistols grow on you. I usually carry a Colt Lightweight Commander 45 or an Officer-size Kimber 45 in an IWB holster when I am out and about but keep a P365 in my pocket about all the time I legally can. I shoot a 1911 better than any other autoloading handgun I have.
