Dumped a load at the landfill and started pulling out. Heard a clang and something started dragging. Figured I’d just picked up something around the axle so I pulled down to close the compactor door and check it out.

Looked all under the truck and at the axles, driveshaft, etc, and couldn’t find anything. Then I walked to the front of the rear axles and looked back. Bam, there’s the problem. Spring insulator cap failure (also known as elephant pads).

We knew the pads themselves needed to be changed and just couldn’t find the time to get to it. But that just makes the truck ride a little rough. Never seen a cap failure before.

Still at the shop replacing them.

I’m before Brian asks you when you started calling the old lady “landfill”.

Something similar happened to my oldest brother in an old S10 pickup. He had just driven home from work and CLANG scraaape....his axle has broken right when he got into his driveway.

My brother wasn’t/isn’t known for taking care of...well...anything

Article reported the rear elephant pad buckets broke and came off or bolts broke and came apart causing the rear axle to let loose.
The driver was fortunate to walk away from this.
