Hey y'all! As of the current moment, the next firearm I want to get is a Glock 34 Gen 5 MOS. I currently like it for the following reasons:

Its magazines fit in my EDC, my Gen 5 Glock 19, so there's mag reciprocity
It comes pre-fitted with an MOS plate, which I intend to use to affix a good quality red dot, probably Vortex or Burris.
I have six 31 round magazines that I panic-bought from PSA and want to effectively use them. They've been reliable in my 19 and I think they'd get good use in a G34.
The Gen 5 improvements over the Gen 4 are satisfactory enough to me that at the current moment, I feel I would be happy with the gun as it comes in stock configuration. It comes with a "good" barrel, a "good" trigger, and with the MOS it means my sight is as good as the red dot I put on it.

But I've had a few discussions with my roommate, who suggests that getting a G34 for competition usage is not the wisest choice, and I should really consider other options, such as a metal-framed CZ. This is a reasonable assertion, but eh... I really want the G34? In a nutshell, I don't necessarily want to believe that's the case just yet. I just want one because... well, I want it. But I admit that's not enough of a reason, especially when the pistol costs $750.

So my question to y'all is what shooting competitions are there in which a Glock 34 Gen 5 would see effective, practical and competitive use right out of the box? In the end, the more important element is individual training and proficiency, which believe me, I've put the work in already with my current guns and will continue to do so with any gun I do get. This question relates to any kind of firearms competition. Speed, accuracy, anything that really gives the model a chance to shine, in which its innate qualities make it competitive with other like models. What is the G34 *good at*? What *isn't* it good at?

And I suppose I'm really going to get myself roasted for this one, but for the same price point, are there other guns I should really be considering instead? Why, and for which types of competition are other models recommended?

I recognize that there are people on this forum that are far more experienced than me, and I'd really like those folks' advice on where to go from here. I've never been to a competition before, but shooting is my passion, and I want to show that competitively - smartly. Thanks a bunch!

Nothing can beat a Glock 34 for the money in the competition world, IMO.

Bob Vogel and Taran Butler have put the argument to rest a long time ago. It’s an awesome gun.

Stock G34 or with optic, is suited well enough to USPSA: Production and Carry Optics; IDPA: SSP and Carry Optics; and of course GSSF. Permissible mods vary, 31 round mags are only an option for USPSA Open this gun would not be well suited to that.

Steel framed guns are in vogue right now for USPSA Production and getting a following in CO. CZ Shadow 2 and Tanfoglio Stock 2 being most sought. If you like the Glock, get the Glock, they've been used to great effect by many.

The 34 is what Glock put out for the competition world. Its market share was directed at the competition shooter. Its the majority of glock handguns at any competition you would go to.

Where on gods green earth did you find your roommate?

Ulterior motive?
Roommate wants Shadow 2 (he did specify CZ) in house to borrow or pick up cheap if Gnash decides games will you get you killed in the streets?
Not a bad plan, unfortunately my roommate shares my account.

I shoot a Uspsa match with a guy that runs a 35 in limited division and he puts a spankin on a lot of people with that gun. You’ll be just fine shooting a 34 in production or carry optics

Doesn't @RJM shoot a Grock35 in Limited?

He can get 'er done.

You didn't say that since _I_ shoot a G34 so we know it's awesome? Oh right, yea, that's because I suck. I blame the G34. Glocks are junk. Or something.

I picked the G34 because it had mag and parts compatibility with my EDC, and because of all the training centric widgets you can get with the glock 'platform'. Dry fire mags, SIRT laser trainers, etc all come to the glock world first and the rest later. They're also dirt simple to work on and you can swap all the guts out with a zillion choices if that's your thing.

I did get the MOS version even though I have no interest in running optics... for now. Maybe I'll change my mind in the future and having that adapter available is insurance.

I've been casually competing in 1-2 matches a month for a few years now and haven't had the urge to swap anything out except the sites and slide stop to make them match my EDC. One sight picture, one trigger press, one slide release. Probably not necessary but I like the feel of training and competing with something close to my EDC.

BTW, the gen5 doesn't fit some holsters well, that slide release on the other side wasn't accounted for (obviously) and can hang up things.

Actually last time I saw you shoot you kicked my ass! Was very impressed.

Just didn't mention you because you shoot crappy steel case ammo and have feinting goats. It's just weird.

I ran steel case ammo in Hackathorn's EDC X9 during the class a few months back. Yes, I would probably put regular unleaded in a Ferrari, so make a note: don't let me borrow your Ferrari.

You can borrow my Saturn. It loves abuse!

Those are kind words but I’m just trying to get better like everyone else. I like glocks bc that’s what I use no matter what. Work, 3gun, uspsa, idpa.... it’s the same trigger, grip angle, and sight picture everytime.
The parts are also very cheap and glocks have a huge aftermarket.

Oh hey, I realized I never responded to this, my bad. Thank you all for your advice! I did end up getting a Glock 34 Gen 5 at the last Raleigh show from KnifeMan32. I love it to pieces; it is an *Excellent* performer at the range. Very tight groups stock, which I imagine will be even better with a good RDS. Currently leaning towards a Vortex Venom to install on it to really see how it performs. :D

Very true FlatFender! I've picked up a few extra 17 rounders to get an even five, in addition to the 31rd mags. The latter are more or less for personal use.

Also, thank you Jayne for mentioning what you did about the slide release! That was a factor in my decision for holster. I ended up going for the 5.11 kydex retention holster; it works like a champ for me. :D
