Any GM mechanics or techs on here? I’m working on a kit car that is based on a 2.2 Ecotec out of a 2009 Cobalt. The donor car ran fine with no codes before I tore it down.

Long story short. I removed the head. Installed on a different block. Then ended up reinstalling it back on the original block. I got a P0016 fault on the first swap. Then I get a P0017 when I installed it back on the original block. I get crank but no run. It sounds like it wants to fire but stops when I stop cranking.

I’ve swapped crank position sensors.
I’ve swapped cam position sensors.
I’m getting spark at the coil packs.
The exhaust smells very rich.

Any advice on troubleshooting?

I’m assuming that I didn’t jack anything up on the wiring harness. I’m going to ask on the kit car specific forum regarding that.

The only thing that comes to mind is you got the timing chain incorrectly timed.

Often, 1 tooth off will still run and drive, but throw codes and/or run rough or low on power.

Does sound out of time. Spark and rich smell but no actual running sounds like one or both cams are retarded.

Might should check compression

The VVT actuators had clear screens and looked good externally.
All four cylinders showed about 150 psi on the compression tests.
I cranked it a few times all buttoned up with the fuel pump relay out. Then installed it and it fired up. Ran very roughly until I gave it some throttle. It got warm enough to start burning off the oil that I’ve gotten on it and the muffler paint. Lol.

It cranked and ran though. I’m still pulling the P0017 code. It’s looking more like I messed up the timing chain install.

Not a tech but definitely sounds like timing belt issue. Not sure how much technical equipment you've got but if its a serious teardown to even see if the chain is lined up you could backprobe the sensors and use a scope to see what the sensors are reading. South main auto on YouTube has quite a few videos on this (he's one of the best diagnosticians I've seen).

Edit: quick Google search says that ecotec is an interference style engine so I'd be very careful about running it anymore, especially since you believe cam/crank timing may be off.

I feel like the timing is off. I have had this happen to me before and its pretty easy to do. Timing verification would be my first stop.
