Got invited to go on a hog hunt in Waelder Texas. Between Houston and San Antonio. At any rate, I have to bring my own rifle. I don't have a 30-06 or a 30-30, I have a .223 or a 7.62x39, both AR platform.

Which gun?

6.8 SPC.... There happens to be one posted in the BST right now.... šŸ˜œ. Hahaha

Ive always wanted to go hog hunting. Maybe Iā€™ll drag my dad and brothers out for one someday.

Depends on just what type of hunt youā€™ll be on. Waelder is on the flat side with mostly lower thick brush. Hogs tend to hug the brush (unless the hunt is cleared land) for shade and cover. Iā€™d be thinking heavier is better for that ... as well as Texas hogs are typically larger. Iā€˜d go with the heavier 7.62x39 of the two you listed. I will say the .450bushmaster and .458socom tend to be the ā€œtrophy hunterā€ choices out there when looking for hogzillas but 7.62x39 with properly placed shots ... check the anatomy of hogs ... will do just fine. Remember the heart and lungs in hogs are a little more protected by the shoulder (damn tough tissues) and upper leg ... a broadside shot slightly angled from the rear just behind the shoulder will get you in the lungs and heart which a 7.62x39 will tear up.

Either will do fine. Hogs have a mystical reputation for being hard to kill, but Iā€™ve never found/seen that to be the case. Have a ball man and take pics !!

Out of your choices? I've used my ARs in 5.56 with no problem on hogs, shot placement is key. The 7.62 should be fine too.
My 2 favorites for hogs, I like stalking them and getting close, is either a bow or a 45Colt SA revolver.

Either one will work just fine. Thousands of hogs each in TX get dropped with .223

If it's nice and open, I would do the 223 just because it's a little flatter and you wouldn't have to be as exacting on the distance and hold-over/dial. Actually, with the 'brush gun' penetration myth busted, the 762 doesn't really give you an advantage if there is a lot of underbrush, so go 223.

I did a hog hunt in Texas in... 2011. Doves in the morning and then drove back up toward Austin for the pig. It was from an elevated stand, so the shot wouldn't have been 75 yards. Didn't see a thing. Was using a borrowed 45-70 lever gun with a cheap scope with horrible eye relief. Never got a chance to even test fire it, probably better that nothing wandered by.

Florida hog hunt was better, but I got to use my own rifle. 300WSM, because reasons. :)

Shot a hog 3 times with a 50cal muzzleloader (behind the shoulder) still kicking .... shot another one with 223 ( behind the ear) dead right there.

The most fun and the best way to get your adrenaline running is to wait until the dogs pen them down and kill the hogs with a fixed blade. I donā€™t know how they hunt in Texas but if thatā€™s an option that would be my first pick.

More importantly bring bug repellent, sun screen, a hat, sunglasses, a light long sleeved shirt, aloe gel for the places you missed with the sun screen.
And snake boots/chaps.

And if close to the border, plenty of ammo.

Neck or head is the way to go ... this one was quarting away so I got him behind the shoulder, to not mess up the mount.

I would think the 765x39 would do the job with no problem. Side thought, if you have a 5 or 6" 44 Mag, take it and you might have more fun with that then the rifle.

I've done this a few times in Kauai. Chasing them down in the jungle certainly gets the heart going.

The guide (a true Florida Cracker) on one of my first Florida boar hunts in the cane fields around Lake Okeechobee carried a Hoyt compound bow and a .44mag tucked Mexican Carry in his waistband. I asked him why the .44mag and he said if he missed heā€˜d shove the muzzle under the boarā€™s head while he was pinned on the ground. First boar that broke out I was back on the cane buggy and he stood his ground dropping that boatrwith a broadhead up the snout ... never breaking a sweat.

NCFurbar, I used to duck hunt in the swamps around Savannah and there is a bunch of hogs in the swamp With the shotgun loaded with duck shot, I bought my first 44 Mag (7.5" Ruger Super Black Hawk) to carry with me. Never saw a hog.

Thanks for all the input and stories. It should be a good time whichever rifle I use.

Just take a rifle/pistol you are good with.
I use a G20 with a chest rig.

Well, the hog hunt was pretty fun. Got three, could have got 20. They were everywhere. I brought both my 223 and my x39 AR. Took two with the 223 and one with the x39.

For anyone wondering: .223 kills them easily with proper shot placement. Two of these guys went down with one shot. The other one wasn't so lucky.
