Seems like it would be a good idea to not have to find an attorney afterward. Any recommendations or places to look for reviews? I don’t expect to find someone that specializes in this but some experience with firearms and self defense law and cases is very desirable.

Don't limit yourself to geography - find an atty with the best expertise in state SD law. He can advise whatever local atty may know the county prosecutor / judge better.

I spoke with the attorney that specializes in criminal law at a fairly prominent firm in High Point. He gave me his contact information, including the land line number that he says he will answer at 3am and said that if something were to happen in another county, he could get the balls rolling, but you really need someone from the area where the incident occurred because they're the ones who "move and shake" with the local DA and judges.

Don’t know if that particular criteria will be included at Martindale.com, but I’d look. They are a national clearing house of lawyers where they list their specialty, experience, education, peer ratings, etc.

While this rings true, I'd venture to say that in some counties/cities (ahem), one would be better off with a State-wide practicing GRNC atty. Any local atty who "moves & shakes" 'round these parts would likely think copping a plea to a 2nd degree felony was a "pretty good outcome."
