I have a friend and co-worker that has a Colt Police positive 38 cal. revolver that is nearly 50 yrs old.He is looking for a good gunsmith to help with a problem that is located near Concord or surrounding areas. The problem is that with the hammer back, you can bump the hammer with your finger ( not hard) and the gun will fire, so it is unsafe to use.I am not up on good gunsmiths in the area so I told him I would ask here.

Colt might not do the work on older guns.

If it’s just a hammer push-off issue, then a gunsmith should be able to recut the hammer and trigger notch, which likely rounded over from someone else’s trigger job.

It’s this interface. You can see this one (in an old Colt Officer’s Model Match short action) had rounded edges—it also exhibited push-off. Some absolute bubba of a wannabe gunsmith boogered it up trying to make a hair trigger.

I recut mine using fresh extra-fine stones, a machinist vise to keep everything square, and constant checking with contact fluid. For reference, I matched the angles of a couple other Officer’s Models that were in better condition. These parts are all forged, so they should be decently hardened at these surfaces. Fixed the push-off issues without messing up the timing and lockup of the cylinder. Any smith should be able to do this.

When you say the pushed-off gun will “fire,” do you just mean the hammer falls? Or is the hammer actually detonating primers if pushed off? The positive lock is a linkage tied to the trigger that slides in grooves on the right side of the frame. It should block the hammer nose from going through the breech face if the trigger is not pulled to the rear. If you’re getting detonation, make sure those parts are intact.
