We have a hateful little heifer we want to make steaks out of. Only problem is, she's pure evil. Breaks right through fences, plows through gates, will not allow you to get near her. She wasn't the first choice for burgers, but because she's such trouble, we had to take drastic measures.

So today, I borrowed this little toy.

H&R used to make these 32 guage dart launching rifled shotguns back in the day.

First thing you need to do is prep your dart. There's actually a charge inside the dart that goes off on impact with the target and pushes the rubber plunger forward, injecting the tranquilizer at high speed.

It was a little challenging finding everything and putting it all together.

Once you get your dart primed and in the bore, there's this little insert that takes a .32 rimfire cap

It goes in off center but works because in any orientation, the rim is against the firing pin.

It's seen better days, quite honestly.

But it works.

There's little to no sound, and it's sort of entertaining watching the dart fly through the air!

Had a few cows over the years that sounded like that heifer, needless to say them leaving asap is best method for them cost less in the long run and no chance of more crazy off spring.

Cool toy to get to play with, seen many times wished we had one to use instead of playing rodeo clown but didn't know anyone with one.

You can still buy all the supplies for the Cap Chur guns. Newer ones use 22 blanks, but all you have to do is change the cartridge adapter.

So why the dart v/s head shot? Would the chemicals hurt the meat or cause any concern? We have processed several and have always just headshot but we could get really close to the animals (usually in a transport trailer). The lil dart gun is neat, never seen one quite like that.

Well, we're not set up to butcher them out. We take them to professionals alive and let them deal with them and package up the meat for us.

Other reason is we pen them up for a couple weeks and feed them corn first. Hard to keep them off grass when you can't get them in the pen.

The tranquilizers pass out of their system long before they hit the slaughter.

I gotcha, thats what i was figuring just thought I would ask. Thanks for the reply.

Ok, gotta ask, since you posted the calf pic. Recently I'm riding down the road and I see a truck with a trailer and a dead calf on it, blood on the trailer. Look like it may have been head shot. Something I've never seen before. He turned off at the landfill. Not really being raised around cows much, I was wondering what was up? You got a clue?

Might have died in the field, or been sick or injured in such a way it needed to be put down. But, at least in my county, you have to pay to dump carcasses. We pay slightly less to have someone who uses the carcass pick them up.

Really cool toy. I always wanted to play with one. Guess it goes back to the old Marlin Perkins days! Hurt Cap Chur when H&R stopped making the Pardner single shot line. They purchased, whole guns, receivers, parts and some barrels from H&R. Not sure what action they and Pnue Dart are building them on now.

Like mentioned before more than likely sick or down and had to be put down. If they are down or have been given antibiotics or certain medicines they cannot be taken for slaughter with in usually a 30 or 45 day waiting period . Depending on land fill some will take them and charge you or there is a few people around that you pay to come get them. Another option we have used in the past and they gladly take them is the tiger rescue and they can use them for feed as long as it is one that was recently put down.
