Gout

Agreed! There’s few I would wish it on. Colchicine has been a lifesaver for me. It has cut flare ups from a week to two weeks of agony to just a day or two of manageable pain. I hope you get some relief soon.

What are the common symptoms? I had a high uric acid result from a blood test a couple years ago but the next one was normal. My Dr. asked me if I had any symptoms, I told her No but I have no idea what the symptoms are and she didn't tell me... lol.

Yes. Yes it does. But, the meds work.

I went a year with it before knowing what it was. Back then, I played ice hockey 3-4x per week. I took a slap shot off my toe and just figured I broke it. Then, figured I just kept re-injuring.

When I finally mentioned to the doc, he called me an idiot and gave me meds.

common symptoms are red, swollen joints with intense pain. Normally in the feet.

My dad used to have it in his feet and elbow. He said it hurt so bad that laying in bed with just a sheet over the joints caused them to hurt.

Red meat and alcohol are supposed to be avoided when it flares up.

Ice cream or a milkshake are the two things that will absolutely send me over the edge when it comes to gout.

Tart cherry juice works well.

Beer … beer is worse than liquor … but both are not good.

Prednisone is about the only thing that truly works for me during a flare up. 1 or two pills then Im good to go.

Not had to deal with it. But if you come over, I'll smack another joint with a big ass hammer, that'll make you forget about the gout

@georgel

I had it Sunday night to the point I couldn't go to sleep. It wore me OUT!
I have had it in my feet, ankles, knees and elbow. I have a lasting Knob on my left elbow from a week log bout. Most times I can catch it before it's full blown but it sneaked up on my Sunday with No warning. MUCH better today!!!
The Meds Do Work...

Oddly enough, the big toe is the most common site of inflammation. I thought I had plantar fasciitis, because the sole of my foot hurt and my calves were sore. Then the pain became focused on my toe, to the point I thought I had broken it. After about 24hrs it had swollen to the point I couldn't put a shoe on and even a elevation change, like from laying down to standing caused it to pound with pain. Dr didn't offer me much other than to ride it out. He thinks for me it's a one and done, depending on a blood test after the flair up subsides.
Did I mention it hurts like a SoB. My wife knew it must be bad, because I said I wanted to go to the doctor, which I never do.

Yep, I had never had it till a year ir two ago and haven’t had it since. There was a really good thread on here awhile ago.
Common symptoms ? Freaking pain !!!!!!

I will say I have been diagnosed with it since 25 years old. Use to do the cherry extract etc but come to find out about 5 years ago it is stress that triggers my flare ups, not food/drink related.

Old wife's tales of red meat and wine are not true as they do not really know why some folks with very high levels of uric acid get it and some don't. They do know there is some hereditary traits but no real why certain people get it and others don't.

I finally went to a rheumatologist because my Dr started thinking it was rheumatoid arthritis. Nope, it was joint damage from so many years of untreated gout flare ups, just quick fixes.

Best thing I ever did because now I am on proper medication (allopurinol & sulindac, your mg's may vary). It took damn near a year for him to figure out the right dosage but I do not get anything now.

If you have gout I would recommend going to a rheumatologist to get you on a proper medication. No more days of rushing to get a steroid injection along with a pill regiment because I can't walk!

I used to have one beer before bed every night. Got one smack down from gout and stopped drinking beer. No more gout. Lost weight too.

I swore by cherry juice or even better 1000mg cherry extract pills but then nothing could stop it.

Just mentioned this thread to my wife and she said well it worked for 10+ years. Yeah but now I have the joint damage of someone with arthritis for 20 years because it was never really treated. Every day is pain. He said the crystals in the joints should break up over time but like I said, 2 years so far. Beats getting any flare ups though!!

Doc claims that it will get better over time but I don't believe that at all. 2 years going to him, 1 year it took to get everything to a level where I do not have flare ups at all, 2nd year still in pain daily.

Got it last year for the first time. Had it in one foot then a few days later it left and went to the other foot. Local hospital missed it. Local podiatrist friend gave me Colchicine and it was gone in less than 2 days. Since then I've had plenty of beer and shellfish - but it never came back. Fingers crossed.

Slightly off topic, the wife just mentioned that at the doctor's office, other than masking no one said anything about COVID or the vaccine. And it was a Novant facility.

The first few gout flares I had I was young. Everyone said "stress fracture." Finally an ER nurse was the one who said, "holy cow, that's gout!". I used to get a couple significant flares a year, and mine are triggered by some red wines and non-beef hot dogs and some sausages. Since I have been on allopurinol I don't get flares any longer and my uric acid numbers are in the middle of normal range.

The only thing that hurt worse than gout was when I separated my shoulder. It's nearly my "10".

My 85 yr old mother had it bad. 2 weeks ago. Feet ankles wrists and hands turned purple. 2 weeks on Uloric and she's fine. Now she has some sort of infection. When you are 85, it is something all the time.
