Getting ready to seed a barren, dirt front yard, and overseed my mostly grass back yard. Last fall I planted a cool-weather grass in the back. Can I use the cool weather grass in the front, too, if I plant now to get some germination over the spring? Or do I need to use a warm weather grass since it's, well, warm weather?

If going in now, cool weather grass will get a good start. But plan to water all summer. If warm weather grass wait till end of April to seed, bur still plan to water thru summer

What he said. A cool season grass does better seeded in the fall but can work now just not ideal and requires more watering threw the summer since roots do not have much time to get established before summer. Personally wouldn’t mix the two types in a yard if you have a good establishment of one already or one section will go dormat while the other section grows and it will reverse the next season.

something i learned at a reloading class today: gunpowder is great fertilizer.
the deal is...if you have "mystery" gunpowder leftovers, just throw it on the ground.
don't reload with it, since it's unknown/old/etc.

fall over seeding works best. In the spring, temperatures fluctuate a lot more. Can be 80 one day, and hard frost a few days later.
I gave up in spring seeding.
I put down drought resistant grass. Dont water at all in the summer and it still stays green. Grows like crazy when it rains. 4 inches in a few days sometimes. I've had to mite twice in a week when get a rainy spell.

Going to revive this thread. Now that we're getting into the cooler nights and slightly cooler days, I want to put out some seed to help limit the mud in the winter when the weeds die out. I've used rye in the past if I can get all the leaves raked up but looking something longer term that will make it through into the beginning of summer.

Any thoughts? This will be spread over the current grass/weeds growing and a good chunk is shaded by a big pecan and red maple.

Grass doesn’t grow well under trees and even worse if the roots are barely underground from hard soil. Only tempoary grass then it’s gone. Winter rye mixed with other fescue is ok but it will not be alive come spring and you will mow all winter. I would till it up three inches deep and cover in tall fescue. Now is the ideal time to plant grass if it will take. Of course you need to test the ph and get the soil correct. Never enough lime in this stinking red clay in NC.

If I had the money I would lay Bermuda sod tomorrow and be done with chemicals and seed. That stuff chokes out weeds even if it’s ugly in winter. Throw a little winter rye down in early November for a touch of greenery until late April.
