Gun safe at BJs

looks like 14 gauge steel if I found the right one online. If that is the case it would be susceptible to simple prying attacks.

I got a safe like this when we were in NH.
BJs helped load in on my truck and a friend helped me put it in my office.
And I bolted it to the floor.
The metal might have been thinner than some would like but it seemed to be OK.
The door had 6. 1 1/2 inch rods - 2 each side and 1 on the top and bottom.
It also has a long emergency key so if the keypad screws up you can open it.

it will keep honest people away from your valuables and most idiots.

IMHO- buy a cheap safe like this is you want to make your guns safe from kids, etc etc etc, knowing that a very determined/professional can pop it open in short order.

Getting something theirf PROOF/close to that will be very expensive.

From what i have seen, most home invasions are smash and grabs. They dont want to spend a lot of time inside a house. They want quick, easy, and simple to sell. So, no, this wont stop someone specifically entering your home to rob the safe from doing so, it would keep the vast majority of smash and grabbers away as they wont take the time to bang on a safe or pry it open.

If it were me, id keep my "workin' guns in it, stuff I need easy access to, but want it out of the hands of most people. But I'd store my "heirlooms" in a different place.

So years ago I bought a safe from Dunham's on a black Friday sale. Truth be told it's probably the same exact thing as this one with a different name on the front. I'm a tinkerer, and took the door apart to see how it worked. Essentially the entire mechanism and all those fancy shiny locking bars relied on a 3/16 roll pin. I returned the safe the following day as a result.

In the years since I've become a safe snob, to the point of building my own safe with custom re-lockers and all sorts of other redundancies. If you can spend 5K on guns, why not spend the same to protect your investment with a QUALITY safe? I understand not everyone is equipped to build a safe, but don't protect your investments with a crap safe either.

And if you absolutely have to have this safe and can't afford something else, I recommend bolting it in a corner to make prying more difficult. Then put a cheap stack on safe beside it full of a few rocks and broom sticks. A robber would run off with the stack on and hopefully leave your crappy Costco safe alone.

Another option I'd recommend is watching marketplace and CL for TL safes. These are generally commercial units people will sell for almost nothing due to the weight. A TL rated safe will outperform any Liberty safe out there.

^That^ is actually pretty practical advice …
Back when that safe retailer auction was on, I considered buying the cheapest safe there as a dummy.

If your house is being targeted for a gun theft, they are bringing the proper tools to open just about any safe. There are any videos on how to open gun safes, it’s doesn’t take long to break in.

i wouldn't mind another safe just to try and organize pistols. i could use my pistol shelves inmy current safes to organize suppressors.
but i'd still need another safe just to space out rifles.
I need a dedicated gun room. Maybe when we move I can reinforce a guest room a little bit...

Agree that unless you're targeted for a gun safe specifically, they will not come with tools required to open a safe. Most homes are more victims of smash and grabs.

Drake in Roxboro makes good safes.

I'd stick with a mechanical over electronic lock personally.
