First I want to make it abundantly clear I am not thinking of doing anything that would land me in a world of legal shit. That said does anyone have any experience with/building the H&K G3? I am seeing surplus lowers for sale @ $80 but what is confusing is that they are not demilled and have a fun switch. How involved is a build how are these not NFA items.

The lower on a G3 is not the receiver. It's just the pistol grip and it holds the trigger group. I'm guessing its not illegal until you try to put it in a gun(I have never tried to buy one). I know that people modify them to make them semi auto.

The upper part is the serialized receiver.

I don't have experience building one, but I know that its pretty involved. You gotta bend, fold, weld the receiver and press the barrel in.

I know this is an old thread, but somehow I missed it. I have a HK 91 pre ban built by H&K in Germany and imported pre '89.To import them,The lower receiver where the trigger group goes was modified to not accept the SEF housings. The front mounting pin was changed to a Shelf. It would be nice to buy them for spare parts, but I don't know what parts will interchange. I think you can buy them "clipped and pinned" that is supposed to fit.

Semi auto rifles can't readily accept full auto parts per atf regulation. A full auto gun that has been demilled and turned into a parts kit which almost all of these are. When they are rebuilt they are modified in such a way as to not accecpt the full auto parts. Just like a ar15, the m16 full auto internals will not work in one with out modification to the lower a upper with the correct cut out and a full auto bolt carrier. This is why it is ok to run a m16 carrier in a ar is because it can't readily be converted to full auto. Depending on the model of gun significant modifications have to be made to convert them. It is a lot more work than just dropping a few parts in them. 1919a4 semi autos have a different right hand side plate than there full auto brethren as well as having there bolt assemblies trimmed down to prevent the installation of original parts. This is just a simplified explanation and is not complete in any way just trying to give you an idea.

I am not sure how involved the build process would be, but I can say after shooting one that they are a ton of fun. I have only shot the semi-auto version. The only down side is is the cost of 308 ammunition.
