I stumbled across an H&R 949 revolver and I know someone has more info on these than the googlenator can find.

Pretty sure this is a pre-transfer bar gun since it has an earlier than AU serial prefix.

The finish and action is crisp and bluing is decent for an H&R. Here it is next to my friends equally as unique High Standard Double nine.

Nobody else is a fan of the H&R SA DA revolvers? I seem to recall that @shadowsbane had a few of these. Anyhow I guess its off to the Amazon store for the $80 Bill Goforth book....

Also I have discovered that it has an achilles heel, the plastic mainspring head. And the metal ones are out of stock at Numrich [emoji57]

Yeah I am quite fond of the H&R revolvers. (also the Garands) What do you need to know?

The plastic ones are handy cause they mostly only break when you dryfire the gun. Stops more serious damage from occurring. Kind of like a shear pin on a tractor. Rarely seen one break that wasn't due to dry firing.

It turns out mine doesnt have a head on the mainspring rod at all. Sometime in the early 80s they mustve just drilled a divot in the back of the hammer, and the mainspring rod fits into it. I fires around 200rds out of it this weekend and it is a shooter with no issues. In fact this thing is huge fun. Now to ditch these crappy grips...

I have very limited experience with H&R, but it is positive. Bought a H&R 999 (9 round .22 lr / top break) for my father-in-law. He came down for a visit and we talked guns. At some point, he mentioned a strange 9-shot .22 lr that he toted around in the woods decades ago. Could tell that he really liked it....whatever it was. I identified it online that night. The next day found a 999 in the case at Cabelas in Fort Mill, SC. Just a coincidence. So, bought it for him but held onto it and shot it occasionally for about 6 months. :)

Here it is...
