For the beginning of Chanukah this year I thought I’d share a 5 year old level of explanation for the Jewish High Holidays that I found online.

Chanukah: They busted up our temple and tried to forcibly convert us. We responded with guerilla warfare. Let’s eat some fried food. Candles!

Rosh HaShanah: Happy New Year! It’s time to ask (and grant) forgiveness for the wrongs done in the past year, pledge to do better, and wish for a sweet new year. And go to synagogue for HOURS.

Yom Kippur: Rosh HaShanah’s somber counterpart. God decides on this day your fate for the next year. Repent your sins, hope for forgiveness, and fast. (And go to synagogue for HOURS.)

Passover: They enslaved us, God freed us. Remember this via a big ceremony/feast and then don’t eat bread for a week. This is a big one; you’re going to have to clean your house and host all your relatives.

So, basically, the entire Jewish holiday calendar consists of them giving the middle finger to death while high-fiving each other, with or without various combinations of prayer and foods.

Below is an even simpler breakdown of all the Jewish holidays.

We started attending a Messianic Jewish congregation (basically Jews with Jesus) about five years ago and have started celebrating God’s commanded holy days (and traditional ones like Hanukkah as well). I’ll tell ya, it is really a lot of fun and very educational. I even built a Sukkah this year for Sukkot!

So we’ll have a menorah next to the Christmas tree as we have for the last several years. Chaug Hanukkah Sameach!
