Picked up another 10/22, cause I could.

Get it home, and shoulder it, it looks like the rear sight dovetail was milled crooked. The front sight looks mostly in line with the receiver.

Do I send this to Ruger? Or just go ahead and upgrade the barrel?

If people don’t send stuff back they will continue down this path. It’s cheaper for them to cut cost in quality control and make repairs, because they know most people would not send it back.

9 times out of 10 you get exactly what you expect from Ruger. But that one time makes you question the qc department. Just "wow, that went out of the facility? Seriously!"

It makes me wonder sometimes. BUT contact them and they WILL make it right.

I had a 10/22 several years ago that was so horrible. So, so horrible. I have never not closely inspected a new purchase after that. Out of square rear dovetail, front sight mashed into front dovetail leaving 1/32" gap from one side to another. Divots in the receiver from a crappy casting. Machining marks you could hang a fingernail on on the bolt and inside the receiver...

To their credit called cs and asked to return. The rep was skeptical sounding but didn't hesitate to send me a label.

Day after it showed received, I got a phone call from someone at Ruger incredulous that such a thing made it into a customers hands and offered to upgrade to a stainless version and sent a swag package as well.

To me it was like they were training new hires with "qc failed" parts and somehow one of them made it's way to me🤣

Anyway. I trust them enough that I have bought many Ruger products since and to this day wouldn't hesitate as they are all as expected. But if anything is wrong they will fix it without a hassle.

It's not an excuse, but...

I can only imagine how hard it is for these guys to hire anyone with an even rudimentary work ethic, ability to read and follow instructions, arrive on time and sober...

I can definitely agree about how terrific their CS is. I have had to interact with them 3 times and each time I was delighted with the responsiveness and outcome.
And, from a purely business oriented viewpoint, Sturm, Ruger & Co. is an example of how American firms should be run.

I am reminded that the very first Ruger firearm was made here in Chapel Hill. On campus.

Thanks all….I’ve contacted CS, hopefully they’ll get this one back and squared away before long.

Please post what they get back to you with. I have a takedown that has a similarly poor rear sight setup. I'm using an optic so it wasn't a big deal but since I've replaced the barrel if they're going to fix yours I might as well get mine fixed as well.

And as to your question, their QC sucks. I currently have 4 rugers and 2 of them have gone back for service, 1 is fine and the 10/22 is wrong but not fiddled with yet. I would never recommend them to anyone who isn't willing to do the CS dance.

Sure will!

This is my 5th or 6th 10/22. But the first “new” one. All the rest range from the 70’s to the early 90’s. Zero issues with any of those other than FTFeed with aftermarket magazines. Exception to the oldness being a 22 charger receiver thats laying around waiting for me to SBR it.

As stated above skilled operators are hard to find nowadays and hiring anyone with a decent work ethic is even harder.

We all grew up fixing our bikes and cars - I had a full set of tools in high school. PS5 controllers don't help develop the same skill set. Just saying. Not to mention basic math and geometry competency.

Ruger was good back in the day. My first hunting rifle was a 270 and it was a tack driver out of the box. It would put 3 shots in a dime at 100 yards with any ammo I fed it. That one was stolen and I replaced it and couldn't hardly hit a 100 rd target with any ammo. Started reloading and finally got back to 3 in a dime. I was told Ruger started farming out their barrels was why this happened.

Ruger was never a top tier gun manufacturer but they really have gone downhill in the past decade. At this point I rate them lower than Taurus.

more and more true. we keep having to fire staff for making threats against fellow employees, general public on site, and management.
I've talked to people in the company all over the country and we're all seeing the same thing. the talent pool has dried up and the available people are getting worse and worse.

Can't help but consider that Ayn Rand's controversial dystopian novel 'Atlas Shrugged' was actually a documentary of ... our modern reality.

John Galt, the main character in the story, commissioned all the productive and able people to leave society. The ones remaining were ultimately forced to admit that the meritocracy they had fought so hard against were actually the people they depended on for their survival.

Send it for service. Ruger like all mfg is not beyond fault but they will make it right unlike other mfg that may give you the run around SI...cough...couGh

ETA: could be worse. I just saw a Taurus revolver sent back for service. The notes were explicit that the problem was with the cylinder. Revolver came back saying minor corrections and cylinder had been replace....Excpet we noted the same problems and fouling pattern after the service and then noticed a tell tell scratch we had noted on the original cylinder indicating it was the same one and nothing had been changed. Ooops

I've not had good luck with Taurus and won't buy from them or Savage again. Savage CS is dog****.
