I've been shooting NRA/CMP highpower since 2004 and hit a milestone today: I shot my first "clean" string offhand (standing)! That was 10 shots standing @ 200 yards for a score of 100-1X. (the x-ring is 3" in diameter)

It was only a practice session, but I was pretty pleased since I've been trying to do this for 14 years. I guess the planets were just in alignment today.

Strong work sir! I shot my first possible from the 500yd line and I still have never forgotten that feeling. 200yd offhand is way more impressive than that!
Keep it up!

Nice shooting! That ain't easy.

Damn fine shooting!!! I'd pick you for my team anytime. FAR better than any performance I could produce.

But don’t line touchers count? 2x?

Yes, if a shot breaks the line it does count as the higher value. Radial tears don't count though... I called it as a 10 but I'm happy as a pig in mud regardless of whether it was 1x or 2x.

Thanks all. Now to duplicate this at next Saturday's match @ PHA

Very nice, well done. I've never cleaned the offhand, best ever was a 93.

Since you've been at it a while I'd like to get your impression of shooting cross-course with a scope. I "went out" before scopes were allowed, so I'm curious what your thoughts are about the comparison between irons and optics? Does anyone even shoot irons anymore in highpower?

is the PHA match this Saturday, 23 June? Time?

The PHA HP match is supposed to be this Saturday the 23rd and usually starts at 9AM'ish. Showing up by 8:30 is a good bet.

I was a die hard iron sight shooter and legged out back in 2012, before optics were allowed. I held out for as long as I could but eventually crossed over to the dark side last year, partly to take advantage of the rule change and partly due to my aging eyes. For me, I've noticed a significant increase in my offhand scores, coming in around 5 points higher then before. X count is higher as well in the prone position. While optics can enhance your performance, it is not a magic wand and will not turn your rifle into an x-seeking machine! You're still going to have to put in the time to practice, practice and practice some more. If anything, I'd say that optics has caused me to go back to basics and work on my position again as consistent head position is critical for consistent results.

There are still a few holdouts shooting irons, but most folks that I see are shooting optics nowadays. At Camp Perry last year, I'd guesstimate that 80% of the folks up there were shooting irons. The .mil teams have all converted over as well. After I legged out I considered moving to match rifle, but with the change in the rules the service rifle has been allowed to turn into more of a "light match rifle". I'm sticking with service rifle for the foreseeable future.
