How do you deal with Liberal Family Members?

So mom and dad are enabling his wimpiness by keeping his guns for him? I'd tell him if he didn't have balls enough to tell his wife he was keeping his guns at his own home, it sure couldn't keep them at mine. Sell them, find someone else to keep them or man the f up.

I guess if so many people would run from a fight, then we really have nothing to worry about with gun control because everyone will be to chicken to enforce it.

You guys speaking of girlfriends or wives ... Being a non-pc ‘older for my generation’ a-hole I told my soon to be 17 yo son that before he jumps to far in with a girl he needs to ask her ... 1) Liberal or Conservative? 2) Dog or Cat? 3) AR or AK? ... then decide how serious you wanna get.

Ultimately, I’ve gotten to the point that I will not bring up politics, but once someone does, I try and politely disengage once or twice, after that they get both barrels. For your brother in law, I would have said “Well I don’t doubt you wouldn’t; you’re so big of a p___y you’re too scar d to face life away from Mommy and Daddy.”

This is true for progressive and neoconservative family alike.....as being a Liberty-minded person makes me an equal opportunity asshole. Both groups are hardly limited government types, and both find Freedom distasteful if in its exercise another person doesn’t live the way either group thinks they’d should.

As tiring as it is, you have to not let them be the only voice at the table.

Honestly I just don’t give a crap. I’m to old to worry about what others think and have actually managed to reach the point where I don’t go out of my way to ... and everyone knows it. Aside from 3 cousins and 1 aunt we manage to coexist for functions.

Yep! I've made it very clear to each and every one of my wife's siblings over the years that I don't give a rats ass what they think. About anything.

The only opinion that counts is my wife's.

It's mostly all good now that they've finally accepted that. Except the douchebag welfare queen BIL. He went off the deep end when I informed him that Bernie wasn't even going to be the nominee, let alone president and why. Then I schooled him on the electoral college when he started in about Al Gore and the popular vote. He totally spazzed and started using colorful language to describe me and my "opinions". Apparently the words in the constitution are merely my opinion! The best part of the whole thing is that the electoral college became an issue in the election that started the whole thing!

Even my wife agrees that he's not welcome in our home. Ever.

My wife's family (who I see more than my own, because they are close by) is super liberal. My wife doesn't like guns, but she at least tolerates my interest in them. Her two sisters and brother all volunteered for the Bernie Sanders campaign the last election, to give you an idea of where they are coming from. One of her sisters is married and lives with her husband in Asheville, who is the most snowflake that any snowflake could be. His official title is "Shaman"- no, really. He is basically a cult leader that leads counseling and weekend spiritual new age gobblety gook for a bunch of gullible other snowflakes.

As you can guess, we are pretty far apart on political and religious topics. So, family trips and holidays are always interesting. The good thing is that none of them are very smart and they spout the same arguments from the left-wing playbook and are easy to confuse. But sometimes I just get tired of to talking to them, as they are morons and they don't seem to understand logic and reason. Well, actually, the "Shaman", is pretty smart and he scares me in that he is just pure evil (in a nice, smiling way) and I don't want him to influence my kids.

One good thing though is that when their Dad died 12 years ago, they were all given part of his gun collection. Since they were all so scared of keeping guns in their homes, I kindly offered to store them in my safe. I will be shocked if they ever ask for them back and some of these guns are my favorite ones to shoot- GP100, 686, a couple of rifles, a few more handguns.

^This. I will discuss anything with you, but know up front that I consider your opinion to be wrong. I will gladly explain why I am right.

If they are liberal, and can't keep their opinions to themselves long enough to enjoy a family get together, I just don't visit them. And I don't invite them to my house.

Life's too short to waste time arguing with relatives.

Yeah, but it is important to my mother-in-law to have everyone together for holiday meals. I choose to have them at my house because I can control a little bit of what's going on and I can escape to my office or garage if I get bored or tired of talking to them. There's nowhere for me to hide at her house and she doesn't have a comfortable place to watch TV (she doesn't watch it hardly ever).

The most difficult times are that for one week a year, everybody goes to the beach together. This is great for the kids, but I really don't like going to the ocean and I am in a foreign house with people I don't really want to talk to. So, my challenge is to fill my time with golf or something else that interests me. Anybody live near Emerald Isle and wants to go shooting with me in April?

Start with something simple, an hour before they are supposed to show up for dinner call and tell him that you ran out of time to get the steaks for the grill and ask him to pick up some filets from Whole Foods on the way over.

He just needs training.

Just be straightfoward with them. You can tell the cold, hard truth and still be tactful.

Was just talking to one this evening. Guess he figured with everything going on with the Florida shooting, that I had a change of heart regarding all things AR related. After talking with him a bit, he discovered my beliefs have not changed at all.

Reckon that caused him to develop a sudden case of the ass, because he went from 0 to raving lunatic in about 5 seconds flat and called me a "f*cking hillbilly".

I don't know....his tone seemed to suggest that he meant that as some sorta insult.

That's a really good idea.

Next time politely ask that he refer to you as an Appalachian American from now on.
That will definitely drop one of his valves.

I'm also fortunate that my inlaws have no libtards in their ranks. BIL & nephew are avid shooters/hunters/archers, tho his wife is a piece of work. Not liberal, just psycho jealous & lazy as sin. My MIL's (awesome lady) folks are hardscrabble German country folk & FIL's (perhaps more accurately, literally, outlaw) people come from the hills of AR & TN. No snowflakes in that crowd.

Back when Bill Clinton ran the first time my ex MIL was talking crap.
I asked her if she would let Billy boy date one of her daughters?
No was the answer.
I asked her why she would treat her country any different than her daughters?
Open mouth and no answer.
We never talked politics again.

My cousin who does not have his stuff together, although better in the recent years than he ever had. He was 40 something living with his parents. My parents host my Dad's side of the family over because we have shop (pole barn) that can hold everyone.

Short story he had his new soon to be bride over and she notice the ton of brass at the rear door and AR hanging on the wall, by my mill (the back door to the shop is 100 yards to my berm). Happen to hear her say "oh god they have assault rifles what he hell....you guys are a bunch of hicks." At this point I piped up and said "Oh wow, nice AR" and grabbed it....she then opened her sewer and stated "The people here have no self respect to leave all this evil laying around " (her exact words) I extend my hand and said "Hi, welcome to my families home and to my evil twin. Hey what dish did you guys bring?" ....that's when she knew she had screwed up. She turn all shades of red, but never brought up politics again. They didn't bring a dish either...but they were loading up left overs as if they didn't have food at home. Both are extremely over weight. Her kids are Bearnine supports...my wife use to be left but she's came around.

Block em on Facebook, ignore em at holidays.

Easy for me-

Same. Ive got a sister from my dad's first marriage who lives in commifornia and has the mindset to match her residence. Facebook blocked. No contact in years. No regrets.

I have no libtard...... I mean liberal family members. If I did, I probably wouldn’t talk to them. Not disown them but for health reasons not associate/interact with them

My wife voted for Obama twice because she grew up being told by her mother that "Republicans hate anyone who isn't rich, vote for Democrats, they care about you."

This was of course before we got together (her voting for Obama x2).

When we got together and started talking about our views on things, she fell on the conservative side on almost everything. She even owned guns. So, I asked her how in the hell did you end up voting Democrat then? And she told me about the political edijumication her mother provided her with. She was never into politics, so didn't look into things for her self.

Fast forward... Her and I campaigned for Cruz together, attended rallies up and down NC and SC, and even went to the Conservative Review Convention in Columbia.

Her parents live back up north (where we're both from) and don't visit often. They don't bother calling her anymore and much of it has to do with her views as their both flaming liberals. It's sad that she can't have a relationship with them anymore because of it, though.

As for my side of the family, we're all conservative.

Just for fun....have your relative take this quiz https://www.isidewith.com/political-quiz
People on either side are usually surprised with the results but doesn't mean they will change their political leaning right away - takes time.

Maybe tl;dr, but this excerpt from (Msgr) Robert Hugh Benson's Lord of the World (1907) marvelously foreshadows the modern blurring of "friendship" with "sentimentality" and the loss of decorum in the public sphere. For context, one priest has lost his faith to "the Lord of the World" whilst the other, Percy, remains steadfast.

„I suppose you will cast me off,“ said the other. „

It is you who are leaving me,“ said Percy. „I cannot follow, if you mean that.“

„But – but cannot we be friends?“

A sudden heat touched the elder priest’s heart. „Friends?“ he said. „Is sentimentality all you mean by friendship? What kind of friends can we be?“

The other’s face became suddenly heavy. „I thought so.“

„John!“ cried Percy. „You see that, do you not? How can we pretend anything when you do not believe in God? For I do you the honour of thinking that you do not.“

Francis sprang up. „Well – – “ he snapped. „I could not have believed – I am going.“ He wheeled towards the door.

„John!“ said Percy again. „Are you going like this? Can you not shake hands?“

The other wheeled again, with heavy anger in his face. „Why, you said you could not be friends with me!“

Percy’s mouth opened. Then he understood, and smiled. „Oh! that is all you mean by friendship, is it? – I beg your pardon. Oh! we can be polite to one another, if you like.“ He still stood holding out his hand. Father Francis looked at it a moment, his lips shook: then once more he turned, and went out without a word.

Phase II...

Last time we talked was Tuesday, at which point I was labeled a "f*ing hillbilly" for my views (see post #55 in this thread).

Lo and behold, the rude s.o.b. calls me again today...

"Hey...you hear what Trump said in his meeting? Looks like he's pushing for another assault weapons ban. What do you think about that (smugly)?"

"Don't think much of it, at all. Sides that, I couldn't give less of a sh*t, because it doesn't affect me."

"
You have ARs, don't you"?

"Roger that."

"
Well, if they ban them, you gotta...."

"Look, dude...all I gotta do is f*ing breathe and under the right circumstances or for the right reasons, I'm willing to stop doing that."

"You're just not going to change your views on..."

"No, I'm not and you know damned well I ain't...you just trying to piss me off?"

"Shane...it's like Trump said; we have to put a stop to all this nonsense."

"Banning certain weapons ain't gonna do it. Do you honestly believe that a ban on semi-automatic rifles or pistols will stop evil people from committing evil acts?"

"
Well, if they weren't available, these people wouldn't be able to kill so many people in all these shootings. Those folks in Washington that want them banned are right in their hatred of those weapons."

"You kidding me?!!! They don't hate them. All their security details are armed with them and they seem to be just fine with it. Most police departments have them and politicians seem to be ok with it. Evidentally, they don't seem to hate ARs that much."

"
But all those folks are trained..."

"Wait a second...thought we were talking about mass shootings and bad folks having access to rifles? 'Training' ain't got jack sh*t to do with those events..so it ain't about that, is it? Matter of fact, it ain't really about ARs, is it? Truth comes out...you and all those other jackasses on the hill don't have an issue with ARs unless they are in the hands of the citizenry...that about right?"

"
Well...I hope they do ban them and get rid of all of them!"

"Ain't happenin', my man. They can pass whatever they want; I don't give a fat f*ck."

Maybe it's just me, but is it possible to be in a situation where you are pissed off, yet you take pleasure in it at the same time?

I was at Denver Defense Range today and an employee was saying Trumps compromise was ok. Stated something has to be done. I stated many of the mass shooters were on medication and mental health is a big issue that has been defunded. She says that’s not something that can ever be changed so Trump has to do something.

Ok you’re at a range as an employee where people are worried about Trumps talk of changing many aspects of gun ownership and due process of the law. Just be aware you have alienated a patron and buyer.

Yep, that employee should be fired. He's gonna run off business. At least he should be written up and reprimanded so that the next time he says something out of line to a customer he is GONE... He's an idiot for thinking that any gun control is good and not going to continue into eventual confiscation... We can't give them an inch, or they will take it all eventually. Look at California. I just moved from there because my gun rights were being steadily eroded every year. Each year the state would pass 10-20 new anti gun laws. And when they pass, they don't make an announcement so that gun owners know about the change. They do it quietly so that they can catch us unknowingly breaking their "gun laws". California won't stop until all guns are banned and confiscated. I pray that they rest of our country does not follow suit...

What is it with Libs and their constant want to argue?
It's absolutely apparent to anyone who can see and hear that Libs aren't happy unless they're miserable.

They are immature and insecure. They must always tell people how smart they are. They have a major superiority complex, and pretty much believe in rule by 'experts'. And if you went to the right school, achieved the right degree or work for the right government agency you are naturally better, wiser and RIGHT! ;)

You sir are correct about the "superiority complex" many gun haters have! Its kinda like a flu bug they cant get over. One of my wifes servers(food biz) decided to outwardly complain to and about a gentleman who was OCng in the establishment....guess who that person was and is....ME! I was eating as she whispered loudly from my backside about the group at table 3 that felt threatened by my gun....I thought I had a pair....ha. What they dont, and she didnt expect, was a response! An educated response just slays them because they can hate facts, but they just damn sure cant changem!! As Hogjaw sings...."Ive seen you before"!! Apologies for not dealing with the twisted family but this is sure on the same target.

Good for you! Glad you got the gun collection and they didn't give them away to strangers or, even worse, turn them in to a gun buy back.
