I just wanted to ask how often do you guys wash out your canteens out?

I have a green Nalgene bottle shaped like a usgi canteen and wash it about once a week. Before I started washing it that often I noticed it was a little slimy inside. Now I’m paranoid and just wanted to hear from you guys.

I drink from it almost nightly but usually don’t kill it. Usually just top it off as needed. Also, would draining then refilling with fresh water lengthen time between washes?

While not a canteen exactly I use a stainless bottle everyday all day to drink water from. Even the stainless gets kinda scummy if not washed regularly. I got a bottle brush and clean it good once a week and it stays clean.

Daily. If it got used during the day goes through the dishwasher overnight.

It depends on what goes into it. I have my normal hydroflask water bottle that only has water in it that I wash at least once a week. If anything sugary or dairy goes in to my bottle I wash it that night. On the flip side, I am pretty sure I never washed my camel back for months when attending a few military schools but nothing other than water went in. If in the field, my bottles do not get washed until out of the field.

I guess I should have added, this lives on a chest rig and I usually only wear it an hour or so each night. Water only.

Have a stainless water bottle. Usually just rinse it with hot water and put it in the dish drainer to dry before I turn in. Wash it once a week and about once a month, I clean it out with bleach.

My Stanley coffee mug is a bit different. I’ll wash the lid every day and give it the bleach treatment once a month. The steel bottle? Hot water rinse every day, but that’s it…it doesn’t get washed…ever…ruins the “seasoning”.

I usually rinse mine with hot water on a daily basis. Every now & again I'll put in a drop or two of dish soap, fill it about 1/3 to 1/2 full, then shake the $#!^ out of it for a while. I try to slosh som earound the threads on the stem & cap just for good measure. Then a hot water rinse & into the dishrack it goes.

I attribute my stout immune system to eating mud as a child and the above mentioned water bottle "cleaning" regimen.

My nalgene got washed when the lid got funky, not very often, but got emptied several times a day.
My stainless, pretty sure I've washed the lid a few times, I'm not sure the bottle's ever been.
Nothing but the finest tap water, the chems probably prevent growth.

Y'all wash stuff? My stainless bottle gets filled and emptied about three times a day, mostly just water, occasionally some Gatorade type powder, sometimes unsweet tea.
My stainless coffee cup gets rinsed every morning, only because I start the day with it full of water.
Sometimes my wife gets a wild hair and washes them both and I scold her gently.

My son once thought my stainless cup and rubber straw needed washing. He must have used half a bottle of dawn on the straw alone. The soap taste never got out, ended up throwing the straw away.

Immune booster, seasoning and flavor, and all of that.

Mine gets washed when my wife notices it and bitches about it, actually a few days later when she sees that I dgaf and she gives up and washes it for me.

When I see that the water is sticking to the stainless lining in an odd way. Happens every few days. Doesn't happen as often if i remember to drain it and let it sit open... but yeah. sometimes i see crud starting to grow and then it doesn't get used until it has had a scrubbing with a bottle brush.
Then after that, I'll give it a few good rinses with filter water, pour a couple shots of vodka in it, and shake the crap out of it.
and since the vodka goes in AFTER it has been cleaned, i have clean vodka to use for drinking purposes...

Wife has a water bottle and a coffee thermos that she insists have to be washed every day. Half the time I just rinse them out and put them in the drainer.

My cups get washed if they grow something.

I have a 64 ounce growler that I wash because I don't use it much.

Plastic canteens usually once every 3-6 months. Put about an ounce of bleach, refill, let sit overnight then rinse thoroughly before refilling.

Camelback same routine unless I am using it more often.
