How to back up

I am renting a U-Haul 6x12 trailer and it has surge brakes. The last time I rented one I discovered that you can not back up hill with it because of the pressure put on back of the coupler causing the brakes to lock up

Is there any trick to backing up a trailer with surge brakes?

There is usually a hole on the coupler to stick a pin though that will keep it from engaging the brakes. Pin size is 5/8” as I recall.

Ask the people from whom you rent it but there is a pin to insert or a knob to turn that releases that situation.

I stopped by U-Haul and there is no hole to put a pin but there is a space to put a wedge of something between the springs and the activator that will keep the plunger from going back
