A while back, a friend of mine showed me a replica French Dragoon flintlock pistol he had made. He's quite the talented artisan and does custom carving and embellishments on custom flintlocks that he builds. So conversation ensued, and I made a case for his pistol. Wood is locally harvested red oak from Forsyth Co. and the top is CNC carved in a French style motif. I delivered the box in unfinished condition to let Bob do his magic on it.

Next project up is a period style case for a Whitworth rifle. The Whitworth was a very high tech rifle in the 1860s with several features far ahead of it's time like hexagonal rifling and a bolt (bullet) with matching hexagonal helical twist to match the rifling. As a result, the Whitworth was extremely accurate for it's time and that was a feature the Confederacy used to deadly effect with those it managed to get through the blockade. The box in the picture is an original with an original Whitworth that was sold in England to a private individual in the late 1860s. No example of a Confederate purchased one complete with all accoutraments still exists so I'm copying this one for a friend's Whitworth replica. Current status on that project, the main box is built with interior partitions installed. It will get some padding and velvet that the originals did not have. I've also sourced a file of the original label to reproduce and put in the box. We've shot his Whitworth several times already with the hexagonal bullets and yeah, it's pretty accurate.
