Hunkering Down**Update**9/16

Damn feral cat decided she was going to be skidish today. Have been able to pet her head for the last 4 or five weeks and now because we were going to bring her in because of the storm she will not come near my wife and I.

It senses your alterior motive and backup plan, el gato stew.

She came within a few inches of me a few minutes ago, but definitely was not going to let me pet her.

Our office shut down around noon yesterday. That's when the lane reversals and the evacuation began. Our drivers couldn't go anywhere anyway. We all did an outstanding job of taking care of all of our O2 patients all day on Monday and up until noon Tuesday. Actually, we didn't even have any phone calls after 11 AM Tuesday.

This morning I went into Conway. I had a check that I wanted to cash. The bank was doing a brisk business. Everyone was making a cash withdrawal. From what I overhead most were getting $100 to $300 in cash.

There is a Food Lion across the street from the bank and the lot was packed. I didn't really need anything but thought I'd go ahead and pick up a few more things while I was already out. I decided not to get into the crowd at Food Lion and drove on over to Aldi's. They were closed. I went to the IGA. Not crowded, at all. I saw bottled and jug water on the shelves, bread rack was 3/4 full, meat section was pretty bare.

I got some hamburger to make a meatloaf, a couple of packs of tortillas, a dozen eggs, and a couple of other things that I have forgotten.

Funny thing, when the lady was ringing up my purchases, she looked at my tortillas and said, "I can't sell you these, go get another pack." She held them up and they were covered in mold. I stepped over and got another pack and told her that I have never seen any tortillas mold, I didn't know that they could mold. LOL

My fridge could teach you a lot.

The fool is staying in Apex. With the current shift we should be fine here. Well stocked and ready. If something looks different in the morning we will head for the hills. I grabbed some extra 2 cycle oil an extra chainsaw chain and some beer and wine today. Plus I grabbed a pretty good amount of freeze dried food the other day. 8 full water bricks, 3+ cases of bottled water plus various teas and tons of Gatorade. Will fill the tubs in the AM as well just in case.

If anyone local needs any help in the next few days let me know. I'll be around and so will my buddy Tom who owns Camping-Survival.com. His Jeep is well stock and has all the winches and tools for about anything.

Edit - My current ride is kinda gay and good for nothing. :(

This absolutely sucks!

I've maintained a certain degree of readiness and only had to run a few errands to complete it. I'm definitely not looking forward to the storm (although I'll admit to a bit of morbid fascination), but if I was going to be trapped in my home for a day or three, it would have been with my wife and daughter. Scratch that.....

Because my wife is an RN with no small children and lives less than 30 minutes from the hospital, she's part of alpha team. This means when she goes to work at 7:30 tomorrow morning, she will "live" there until 7:30 Sunday morning. She had to pack enough clothes and food to carry her those 72hrs and I bought her an inflatable twin size mattress to sleep on. Did I mention this sucks?

The hospital is maybe three miles, up a straight, four lane highway from our house, but she can't leave, even when she's not on duty.

I'm not happy at all.

You will have to go visit her on a break and bring her a snack or treat. Big brownie points to be made walking 3 miles in a hurricane.

Or, if @kcult owns a Glock, he could check himself into the hospital with a chronic case of Glock Knuckle.

My son who lives on the outer banks left yesterday for Atlanta to stay with his brother there.
My other son has to stay put in J'ville with the USMC.
My daughter, S-I-L and granddaughter left Morehead City yesterday to go stay with her mom in SC.
Guess where the storm is now headed????? :D (Hint: My ex-wife is right under the current red line)

Well i just read an Email form work stating that I'm mandated to come in tomorrow night which is my (much needed) day off. They said to prepare food and clothes for 96 hours. I work for WCEMS and don't mind coming in to help but there's a part of me that doesn't want to leave my home unattended. Im sending the lady and dog to her grandmas for a few day just so their not alone. We'll see how this plays out. As far as being prepared i have plenty of dried food, ice, gasoline, flashlights and batteries. Hope everyone stays safe.

I got everything I need or want and my boss (me) has told me to take as much time as I need to be positive it's okay to return to work (75 foot trip) and that he'll double my pay just because I'm a good guy. He also said for everyday I didn't come to work he would credit me with a week of PTO and there was a little bonus on the backside if I survived. Damned good guy!!!

By contrast, my crappy job have already started threatening people who might not want to drive through post storm chaos to work part time in a craft store.

About the least essential work ever since we don't even really sell craft stuff that much, just premade Chinese junk.

Sounds about right for a retail job.

Stay safe everyone.

Overcast here this morning. We have done all we can do. The last thing that will be done is to strike the flags. We have all utilities as of now. We have help available in minutes notice from RS's family. There can be no flooding problems here but the wind is a scary proposition. We are 8 miles from the Atlantic, so....now we wait....

Was out taking my two mile walk this morning. Midway through a good stiff breeze steadily picked up. We never get a breeze early in the morning. Checked the radar and saw that the outside fringe had arrived. Made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. We will just get the rain, but after days of thinking it was coming straight to us like Fran did it still gives me the willies.

Here in Charlotte, it's rough. I'm at UNCC, and classes were canceled today and Friday. The suns bright and the sky pleasant, and the oppressive air of no oppressive air lies heavy around us.

I'll be hunkering down doing Euclidean proofs, trying to survive. Stay safe out there.

I was with OCEMS during Fran and Floyd. Fran, I was at work for 3 days? Four? (was my off time). Floyd, we were not impacted in OC but I was supposed to be on mando call; my wife and I had rented a house on Cape Cod for a week, so they let me go. When I got back they asked me to go down east for helo/water rescue support.

At Duke we have something similar. I have challenged it a time or two as I live 8 miles away (2-hour walk if I have to), the only time I was forced to stay was when my relief couldn't physically show up; even then, it wasn't for very long. Screw staying for days.

In Wagram, nothing is happening...yet. A little breeze. Nice and sunny. When the trees start dancing around, you will all be able to hear me yelling, probably. I'll be scared and happy at the same time. I love a good storm, but this coming one might be too much even for me....
I'm wishing all of us good luck and safety.

Millie, get over to the gun shop in Wagram. Sturdiest building in your area. Noon here, still have all utilities. Sun in and out with a 10 mph breeze from the northwest. WHEN the power goes, I will give ya'll a "heads up" when it returns. 'Til then I'll see you in about 3 hours. Good luck to all.

Good luck, sir. Have all you coastal folks in my thoughts.

I'll be hoping for the best for you guys closer to the action. Keep us posted.
Not going to the gun store, though. My house was built a long time ago and it seems pretty sturdy (except for the possible water damage under the tub, LOL.) when you try to saw or drill any wood here it breaks tools! And I'm hoping stuff will slide off my new metal roof...(crossing fingers!)

A prayer to all those that are going to bear the brunt of this on the coast Geezer, Battery Oaks Billy, Millie, and everyone else who's staying. May God see you through this storm safely and without harm. ;)

After much debate we have decided to ride out the storm. Hope everyone stays safe. Good luck!

Final preparations now in place.

That sounds crazy. I feel like WC has pretty good control of this and I bet we’ll be shipped off somewhere once the damage is done.

Did you know a nightingale pilot named Mike Stanton
He flew out of Duke

I appreciate the prayers and we still may need them here, but I'm fortunate to be a bit inland and not near the coast. I often wish I lived near the beach, but I have to say, sometimes I'm glad I don't!
I also send prayers for those of you close to the water....
