I just got my class done tonight, and got 100 on the test....very surprising, given all the new info I took in and am still digesting!

I got to handle and load, "fire," and unload 2 shotguns tonight. I've never handled one before. One was a pump action that held 3 rounds, and the other a break action that did one shot at a time.

It was an interesting class, taken over two nights. I had already gotten myself an apprentice hunting license, so I'm good to go! LOL.

I was the only woman in the class and the oldest person in the room!

There was a young kid who had just been given his first handgun, and so at the end of the class I got up there and told him about my ND months ago, and showed him my tattoo that I see every time I reach for a gun. I hope he remembers my story as he goes through the decades of his life with guns.

PS I asked one of the wildlife officers if I can hunt deer with my .45 1911, and he said yes, that a lot more people are hunting with handguns these days!

You need an AR pistol. :p

Awesome job and congratulations on starting another expensive habit lol!
The guys in class were telling me what kind of shotgun to buy first, some kind of youth model, but I stopped them right there....not getting into another expensive hobby, I can borrow what I need for a match when the time comes!

30+ years ago I was lucky enough to get a summer job at a kids camp that had a range. They sent someone out to certify us to teach the class. That was fun.

The guy said he used to do the class over several days, and could actually take the students out and shoot some guns! As you can imagine, I was very sorry they don't do it like that any more....lol.

You can hunt with the 45 but big thing is being able to get a clean kill.
I'm guessing I need to be a lot closer than I would with a rifle?
(I'm probably wrong, as usual, but that was my first thought.)

The guy we had brought a shotgun and a clay pigeon thrower hooked up to his bumper. Fun!

Whoppi Goldberg says you can't hunt with an AK-47, it will cook the deer! How about a pig?

That's partly why I enjoy being a NRA Muzzleloading Instructor. When we work at a Scout camp, they get to do quite a bit of shooting when we bring the "toys". In teaching the Basic Muzzleloading Course, students get to shoot a rifle, pistol and shotgun.

That said, if you're serious about hunting, just use what you're most comfortable with and can consistently hit with. Your effective range is limited by your accuracy, not the gun. One other myth, tons of power aren't required to kill a deer. In NC, a REALLY big deer is about 200lbs tops. A fuddy duddy old musket with a 500gr Minie Ball will go through that monster deer stem to stern and you'll never find the bullet. Marksmanship and a cool head are far more important.
