Hunting Long Gun Less than 100 yards: Shotgun or Rifle

Agreed, I always used 25 yards as a max for buckshot, 40 was my max with a bow, 50 yards with a smooth bore slug and 75 for rifled barrel slug.

Yes, you can shoot further with some of those, but that has always been my maximum comfort level to kill and not wound.
That's funny, at 200 yards with a scoped rifle barreled 12 I could hit a pie plate every time and could have probably done more just never tried. With standard slugs in a smoothbore I'm confident at 75 yards. Either y'all suck or I'm God's gift to the scatter gun?

LOL, you might be. I'm a pretty good shot as well. I've honestly never tried any distances further than that. It probably just stems back to hunting as a kid and being told how far I could shoot by the old man and it sticking with me. I haven't hunted with a shotgun in years, but when I did I always sighted in at those distances and stuck to it.

IMO:
If you have no rifle;
You need an AR15. They are cheap right now and will accomplish killing small deer from 200yrds and in.

This will serve you in many ways including hunting. You can shoot matches, shoot targets, etc. Get a dedicated hunting rifle later.

I've saw my daddy drop a running doe with 000 at 50 yards. That was all I hunted with until I got older. I killed my first deer with a 12ga at about 20yds with #4 buck. I won't do that again. I like 00 at 40 or 50 yards. My barrel is 30" and it patterns 00 better than 000.

I kept my shots to 40 with a compound to be humane. I keep them to 20 yards with a long bow. A 12ga is good for those distances and a little past depending on a few things. Fred bear killed a tiger at 80 yards IIRC from a moving river boat with a bow. I think most people follow the 40 yd rule.

Most people with a compound should limit their shots to 25 yards.
Trust me I have seen a ton of people shoot. :p

I practiced 60 yards and beyond religiously.
I have three NC state championships (only three years that I competed) in 3d shooting.
Could stack them at 50 like most can at twenty.

The arrows slice thru the lungs at fifty almost as fast as they do at 25. So humanity has nothing to do with it. It's all in ability level that you possess.

Good advice! Uppers in many different calibers are available to make an AR anything you want or need.

Ya' mean somebody actually CHOOSES to hunt white-tails with a shotgun?
'magine dat!

I was forced to use one for over thirty years (until I moved to NC). A rifled barrel with sabots and a quality scope makes a WORLD of difference, but they're pricey.

One thing I noticed is that when you're out in the woods, recoil has never been an issue...can't remember ever feeling that 12 gauge when hunting. But shooting at the range is sheer, brutal punishment!

Whichever way you go, think of Dirty Harry Callahan: "A man's got to know his limitation." Find them and remember them...you'll be fine.

I haven't read any of the above replies, don't hunt, but know EXACTLY what you should own! :p

I am a genius even if nobody else recognizes it.

Grab a 30-30 or 35 Rem lever action and be done with it. Skinner peep sight or 4x scope and go kill critters.

Ok well it wouldn't be a humane shot for me to take. Ive hit the bulls eye at 50 yards with my long bow but I wouldn't attempt it while hunting.

.300BLK AR-15 or .30-3o lever gun. I have & love both of them, with my tastes favoring the lever gun. Perfect for deer w/in 100 yds, pleasant to shoot & relatively inexpensive to feed.

I hunt deer a lot. I'd carry anything anyone suggested up there, and kill anything within 100 yds. Im still amazed at my buddy who has a H&R pardner youth (his sons rifle) and kills something every time he goes out. It cost him 250.00 scoped. Plus, its weighs as much as a pack of chewing gum. And Im lugging an AR10 with a stainless match barrel and 42 lb Nightforce to kill something I could hit at slingshot ranges.

But he doesn't look cool as me with my hernias.

Buy a decent bolt action in .308/7mm-08 and a good scope. They offer a lot more flexability than a 30-30 if you ever hunt at longer ranges. Personally I spend a few extra dollars and get something like this ABolt for $375 than a Axis/American etc entry level rifle.

There is a 7mm-08 with ammo at one heck of a deal on this site.
