Moving to NC in the next few months, specifically Johnston County. I own 30 acres of land and wanting to start hunting this season. I hunt rifle and can see the season is generally October to beginning of January. Checked out the NCwildlife website but it’s all over the place and not the clearest.

Can someone give me the down and dirty of hunting on my own land? Licenses needed? Deer tag limits per season? Shooting hours? Anything else that’ll help? I’m used to hunting in SC, and down there its very easy.

Appreciate it!

You don’t need a license to hunt your own property but you still have to acquire big game tags and report your kills.
Thanks, that was generally my understanding too but good to have others confirm my thoughts. Tags acquired through the NCwildlife site?

Tags can be acquired thru any place that sells NC hunting licenses.
You are in the northeastern section. See attached.

You are considered a resident after 6 months.

I would recommend a quick read through the 23-24 rules and regulations catalog which you can find online or anywhere licenses are sold in NC. There are several county specific regulations even within the different regions that are worth reading. Plus, that way you will be up to date on all the changes that may have occurred for the 2023 season. I skim through it for new rules every year before the season.

Appreciate the advice. I’ll definitely look into once I get down there.
