Hurricane Florence predictions

The only thing I remember about Hugo was going to Myrtle Beach surfing. Otherwise there wasn't anything to it in my area.

I got lucky today. Thinking about backup power. All I have is an older Coleman 1750 generator. It's got plenty of power to run the fridge, TV, router, and a light. I've only ever used it in the winter so the extra fridge in the garage was a non issue. And I was single so showers (well pump) weren't a big deal since there are te showers at work. Hf was sold out of the bigger generators - figures - and Lowe's website said they had 2 Troy Bilt 6500 RW generators in stock for $699.

Then I saw this sitting there next to the last Troy Bilt generator they had in stock. A quick Google search showed decent reviews.

Us Wilmingtonians can kiss our butt goodbye....wife just said Jim Cantore is in Wilmington. He's a freaking hurricane Magnet!!
Let everyone know that they are safer.

I imagine my two college students down there are stocking up on booze right now.

If you have chainsaws, get spare chains for them and carry your saws with you after the storm if you're out and about. A few weeks ago, right after a thunderstorm, I had just pulled into my neighborhood and was headed down the street towards my street when I came upon a downed 12" diameter pine tree across the road. I couldn't get to my house as it's a "one way in, one way out" neighborhood. I called my wife and she drove up the street with my saws and myself and two neighbors cleared the tree and had the road open in about 20 minutes.

I wanted to get home and there was no one else that was going to "save the day" so I did what I needed to do. But after a big storm like a hurricane, if you're out and about, carry your saws and equipment in case you can help someone out or clear a road for responders etc.....

OF COURSE, AVOID AREAS WITH DOWNED POWERLINES.
Great idea. I bought a new Stihl right before we moved last year and cranked it once when I bought it, to replace the saw I bought the night before Fran in '96. It'll ride in the truck later this week.

Take photos of your home if you had any recent work done such as new flooring, kitchen, bath,
painting, siding and or new roof for any insurance claims.
Every year or so we also do a video with commentary for insurance purposes of buildings and contents. I also have a separate video of firearms.

As to chainsaws remember you’re going to be cutting wood with sap still up ... CHAIN LUBE and stuff to clean your chains when they get gunked up.

Don’t laugh ... I’ve used motor oil ... PAM ... cooking oil ... anything to keep it slick. I’d bet his stuff would do quite nicely but just would not be near cost effective not to mention if the power is out he’d be better off using his stuff for “entertainment” purposes.

I don't suppose it would be a "go" to send out governor Cooper to do battle with Florence? Leadership by example; lead from the front, that sort of thing? ::angel::

I predict we aren't going to fair so well with 12+ hours of 137 mph winds and gusts of 160. :(

Just friggin great. I'm headed to Raleigh Monday, back to CLT Thursday. Full tank of gas so I can make the round trip. Plenty of 'hard candy' for youts that may want to play, water, food...

Just when is this supposed to hit? I heard Saturday but now I'm not so sure.

At least I booked my hotel a few weeks ago.

My sister moved to Charleston right after Hugo. I went to visit her a few months after the storm. All I remember was blue tarps on roofs everywhere I looked.

Glad they got my house under construction all dried in with windows in now.

If it hits land as a Cat 4, it's going to be bad times here on the coast.

Hope Mr. Murphy doesn't come calling...
Oh, he’s coming calling alright, but it’s four sides brick all bolted to the stem wall slab/foundation. He’ll have to huff and puff to blow that house down.

Wow, looks like this one will be rough.
Especially if the guy out of VA is right and we get 10+ inches of rain here in the Triad
Hope he's wrong.
But if not, I'll be keeping a close eye on things here at the house.
I know that one side of my yard will flood a bit when we get huge rains for days, never enough to get to the brick base of the house, but still will hold some water. With 10+ I am a bit concerned

Going to go ahead and cancel our RV trip for this weekend (thurs-sun). High winds and double digit rain in the triangle area aren’t exactly conducive to save trailer towing or a fun weekend.

A little off but would a 5000watt generator be enough to run a 1/2 or 3/4 hp well for a short time? Just to fill water bottles and stuff? Will not be kept running all the time. Not going to get one anytime soon just trying to see what I need.

Google to double-check me, but what I see online shows even a 3/4hp pump would pull a max of 3000 watts at startup. So you'd be great with a 5000w generator

Now a Cat 4...130 mph.

Within the last 24 hours, sustained winds have almost doubled.

The only thing I remember about Hugo was going to Myrtle Beach surfing. Otherwise there wasn't anything to it in my area.

I surfed up at 72nd north and got out of the water at 6pm that night. one wave took me a mile or more down the beach. It took a good 30 minutes to paddle out but I didn't even lose a contact lens. Later that night my girlfriend and I were at the myrtle beach high school and they told everyone they had to leave and go further inland. It was like 8pm and dark at this point and the rain was sideways. I remember some poor tourists not knowing where to go and I said follow us. That lasted a mile before they were no where to be found cause you couldn't see five feet in front of the car. We ended up at Coastal Carolina in the gym. The waiting to get back across the waterway was the worst because of the troops, and I woudn't ever leave again unless it were a cat 4 or better.

Just got the call asking if I can come into the Emergency Operating Center (EOC) Wednesday night/Thursday morning. If my wife stays, which I think she will since we might be getting off lucky here in Mt. Pleasant, SC, I will stay at the house and go in after the worst.
