Hurricane Florence predictions

It's going to turn north and just skirt the NC coast and on up into New England.

The latest I got is I'm in the crosshairs

11am update is showing the predicted strength being lower as it approaches the coast. Also showing the track moving south a little bit.

Latest NHC track update at 11:00 today shows it passing directly over our camper at Snead's Ferry, and my sister's house about 1/4 mile away from it.

I went down Sunday and put the slide outs in on the camper, took the lawn furniture and grill over to my sister's garage, and put away any other loose stuff that could blow around. I'm not sure that camper will take 140 mph winds broadside, though. We shall see. It's just stuff.

My sister and brother-in-law planned on staying, but are considering heading out. I hope they do. He can be pretty stubborn, though.

My wife's folks in Calabash were going to stay there, but thankfully they finally agreed to come stay with us in the Triad.

Hopefully we'll fare OK here. We're in pretty good shape prep-wise. We keep gas for the generator, propane for the grille, and plenty of food stocked. We may have let ourselves get a little low on bottled water, but we have jugs we can fill from the tap before the event.

The eye wall will reorganize over warmer water, it'll pick up strength.

I was referring to predicted conditions, not current. The advisory from 11pm last night predicted sustained winds of 140 with gusts to 165 as the hurricane was off the coast. The advisory from 11am is predicting sustained winds of 120 gusts with winds gusts to 150 just off of the coast. I have my fingers crossed it is going to continue this trend, especially since it has a slightly more southern track now. Even in Charleston, I don't think we are out of the woods yet. Hugo flashbacks are starting up.

When the wind is howling at 150 mph can you really tell the difference from 165 mph?? I kind of doubt it, like with cold, can you tell the difference between 0 degrees and 15 below??
I know this is rhetorical, but I can definitively say you can feel the difference in those temperatures. The wind, probably not.

Can you tell, no. But I am trying to point out a trend and frankly, I will take even a 1mph less difference if it is available. So if it is 15mph less, I am very happy, especially if it is not 15mph more.

I would have said no to the temp thing, but a couple years in Ontario taught me otherwise. Spend a week at -40C, then -20C "feels" warmer. -10C? Heat wave!

(I sure don't miss that...)

Precisely, the inside of the can is coated and heating it introduces that coating into the food inside, bad JuJu...
I use a pyrex measuring cup at work to heat up my cans of soup. Works at home too with a propane torch if needed.

Even cans that aren't dented?

Is there some chemical in the cans that affects the soup product during heating?

I guess it's good to have a small camp pot available then.
Cans are lined with Bisphenol-A which mimic the structure and function of estrogen.

I sincerely doubt BpA is going to have any affect on a full grow man. A sedentary lifestyle and poor diet are going to be a greater threat to manhood than trace amounts of a plastic that can mimic hormones.

I'm a lot of fun at parties.

Seriously, you'll be fine heating the can for a few days without power. If you were pre pubescent and doing it daily, you might be in trouble. Or just do what we've done for years and eat it cold out of the can.

Didn't they recently remake them with weeble-wobble bottoms?

Sorry. After having to call an EPA agent and pay them 1200 or something bucks to clean up a mercury thermometer that broke where I previously worked, I'm a bit hypersensitive to chemical fear (of which I'm not accusing the poster I quoted, he was only relaying good knowledge). Hell, we broke open thermometers and played with mercury as kids.

Yep. I did the same thing with the Mercury. Rolled it around in my hand. Neatest thing I ever saw.

Agree, the whole BPA issue was blown out of proportion by the environmentalists and the media - I was merely relaying information that is out there. Even, the FDA couldn’t definitely conclude BPA’s effect to the doses that we are exposed to. Products that we touch every day are coated with BPA like safety glasses and even thermal paper used for receipts.
At my previous employer, we spent millions of dollars for alternatives to can linings because of the misinformation on BPA.

New track has it taking aim at SC after hitting Wilmington. The European model looked crazy, after hitting Wilmington it moves over the ocean and rides the SC coast and makes another landfall around Savannah.
