Hurricane Irma

Yes, let's not forget that others are about to go through a very bad time.
Let's all say a prayer for our fellow Americans. Mother Nature doesn't care if you're Democrat or Republican. She doesn't care if you're rich or poor. She doesn't care what race you are. She is an equal opportunity destroyer.

I pray for all those affected, especially Floridians.

I also do NOT understand why Florida doesn't have a lane reversal plan in place for emergencies just like this hurricane. Seeing 5 miles of 2 lane bumper to bumper traffic is insane when you have two southbound lanes that could be utilized to go northbound!
Maybe we're just a lot smarter here in NC!! Cause we have I40 lane reversal plans in place for hurricanes.

And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. - Luke 21:25-28 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke21:25-28&version=KJV

Didn't we just have an eclipse? Aren't there a lot of tension with NK? 3 hurricanes in the Atlantic/Gulf.

Just saying....

But just remember:

From what I have read, they haven't ran the reversal plan because they have been trucking fuel and supplies south for people evacuating. May not be the best decision but lets hope it turns out better than the railroad evac of the keys in 1935.

With this mornings indicated track, it will hit right where my 85 yr old mother in law is, at her friends house. Her friends house was built hurricane proof, she says. But who knows what that means. She wouldn't commit to flying out on Wednesday and is now stuck.

Ya they did this on the bridge into town where I lived in FL. During evac they would shut down the lane into town and make it northbound only.

Fort Myers and Tampa are looking in a bad way now. They're hoping it does not drift out over the water while passing up the Gulf coast in terms of the bigger storm surge.

Making land fall in Cuba as a Cat 5 as of right now...
Slowed down soon after, and is now a Cat 3. Looks like it will pick up intensity again as it moves away from Cuba and toward Florida.

Looks like it might miss SC and NC altogether. And even if it doesn't, odds are good it will be more of a tropical storm than a hurricane.

I guess everyone can enjoy their milk sandwiches with the power on.

Might be true in Raleigh, but Charlotte to the west is getting lots of rain and 55 mpg wind gusts for six or more hours. That is a recipe for power outages. The tropical winds go 200 miles out from center (near Augusta Tues morning). South Carolina around Columbia to Aiken could have a bad day.

Yes, this is the reason so far. They do have plans to run reversal lanes sometime today but it's not been activated yet.

The forward movement of Irma has changed. It's already in Georgia Monday morning. In Birmingham Tuesday morning with 40-50 mph gusts as far out as Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham coming from the NC coast. /Ventusky model

Your generator had nothing to do with it. It was those 5 cases of bottled water I bought the other day. ;)

Sounds a lot like Star Trek OS (Obsession):

Spock: Mr. Scott, there was no deity involved. It was my cross-circuiting to B that recovered them.
McCoy: Well thank pitch forks and pointed ears!

Frankly, I find Irma's (Serrano) plastic surgery much more frightening than any storm....

I hadta go to Greenville SC today for work. I26 coming back was a total CF. Good thing I know where I am and was able to go local and circumvent all that non-sense.
So I stop at the Ingles on my way home for some usual supplies.
My God! I've never seen so many canes in one spot. The Floridians are here en masse, and it appears that they evac'd all the retirement centers to the mountains.

When is I-26 (mm52-23) not a CF? I can't count the times I've been stuck in that mess, sitting in the car contemplating whittling on my wrists just to pass the time...

Ok I'm watching the weather channel.
Just saw a guy get bashed by a wave standing at the "southernmost point".
I've been right there.
Ok... So. The hurricane is no where near there yet. I bet white street already has seawater pooling up on it. The surge is likely to be feet above the levels I'm looking at.
Why. The heck. Would anyone be there right now?
Is there some super secret 40' tall "Orthanc" type tower everyone can ride out the storm above the roiling waves that will crash over Key West?

@Friday can you shed some light on this?

I know the NOAA weather station is a massive bunker, but it can't hold everyone. It was built by man too....just like the Titanic.

My cousin decided to stay in Tampa. "It's a very sturdy house." He's an idiot and just wouldn't leave his girlfriends side to evacuate with his family.

Famous last words from a coastal resident who thinks their house can withstand the most powerful force on Earth........ Water.

My grandaddy used to say, "fire is a bad powerful thing, but water will put fire out".

Lemme put it in perspective for our Florida neighbors.
A gallon of water weighs 8.34lbs. there are 7.48gal of water per cubic foot.
Let's say the surge is 5ft high, for every 1ft square x 5 foot deep= 311lbs
Now let's do some serious math...

So your house on stilts is 8' off the ground, the storm surge ends up being 9' high.
Let's say your house is 30' wide, that's 1872lbs laying against your house. But wait...there's more!
Now let's factor in a 1fps motion to that water, relatively tame for a tidal flow. Now you have 1872lbs per second hitting your house. The bad news is it's geometric at that point, tons upon tons of force.
I haven't worked the calculations on force in years. All I can tell you is it's gonna be catastrophic force.
Water is incredibly heavy, heavier than folks ever really think about. Add flow( surge) and it can move mountains. And we haven't even factored in the wind yet.

If Irma poleaxes the keys, the destruction will be apocalyptic. I might be wrong. I tell you this, I wouldn't want to see it from my bedroom window. I'd be scared poopless in the NOAA bunker.

They were interviewing the guy in KW at the weather station there. He looked nervous as heck.

I'm probably off base here because I'm not a professional meteorologist, or an amateur one for that matter, but if I was living anywhere in the southern coastal parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, or Texas, I'd be getting a little concerned just about now.

I wonder where the Hurricane Hunter planes fly from when hurricanes are in the Tampa area.

The civilian and NOAA Corps crew members of the NOAA Hurricane Hunters, until recently based at the Aircraft Operations Center at MacDill AFB, in Tampa, Florida, mainly perform surveillance, research, and reconnaissance with highly instrumented aircraft including airborne Doppler weather radar measurements in both Atlantic and Pacific storms. They just moved[when?] in to a new facility at Lakeland Linder Airport in Lakeland, Fl. after being at MacDill since 1993. They fly two Lockheed WP-3D Orionaircraft, heavily instrumented flying laboratories modified to take atmospheric and radar measurements within tropical cyclones and winter storms, and a G-IV Gulfstreamhigh-altitude jet above 41,000 feet (12 km) to document upper- and lower-level winds that affect cyclone movement.

Absolutely correct, @Qball , but the 35 or so miles between the Lakeland airport and MacDill would not be a meaningful difference if a hurricane was in the Tampa area. That is what made me wonder where their alternate base would be if Lakeland was shut down.

Oops. I wasn't paying attention. I didn't realize that Lakeland was that close to MacDill. Sorry.

And the Atlanta Braves apologized for playing this between innings.

Fun trivia fact: I've listened to that song while driving around in a hurricane. Albeit a weak one. But I still get the credit.

I believe this current one's theme song is "Rock You Like an Irmacane."

Ba dum, tisk.
