Hurricane Michael

Lost power at 4:26 PM yesterday. Hwy 87 north from my house into Graham is closed. Several other side streets/back roads in the area closed. Lots of trees and power lines down. I'd be surprised if we don't hear that a small tornado ripped through. Quite a few trees down between my woods and the two neighbors. It's about a 5 acre patch that splits between our three lots. A line of trees got hammered. Luckily they were all away from houses and no damage.

I heard that was due to the approaching cold front. Both wind fields were going in the same direction so it amplified the wind on the backside. Normally the front side is worse, but this one was unusual.

Correct yes Michael itself allowed for upper level winds associated with the cold front to be mixed down to the surface for a brief period as the front passed. We actually saw this similar setup (interaction with a front and a tropical cyclone) with Matthew however the interaction was farther east and occurred overnight. This interaction is why the area of heavy rain from Matthew jumped unexpectedly from eastern NC to along and just west of I95 (Nash-Johnston Counties south through Fay/Lumberton). The front slowed as it approached central NC instead of making it to ENC when Matthew arrived.

Lost power here in high point(all of it) around 3pm finally got it back around 10pm. Went to K ville to eat and it was packed. Met people from all over the triad trying to find somewhere with power and hot food. what an adventure.

Without power for 21 hours
Glad to have it back

Crazy day yesterday. The lake behind my house overflowed and the drain in my yard got clogged. I had waist-deep water until I was able to clear the clog. Water came up to the patio, but didn’t flood the house. Several trees down and a broken fence mean that I have a really busy day on Saturday with the chainsaw.

I was going to like your post, but that would be inappropriate
Crazy destruction
Yea understandable. I pass along this info as it provides a broader picture beyond the talking head idiots on TV for those interested. "The what about the other areas nearby, how did they fair" An example here in NC is Jones county that got hit hard during Flo and is probably one of the worst impacted counties yet not much was said on the TV about them due to not having a "big city" that makes for the "sexy" tv pictures.

I had a talk with some Pike guys today, they have been running ragged.

I have a Yeti cooler with about a dozen drinks in it, when I saw a line crew working, I pulled over gestured for the foreman to see if they needed any drinks & then had him pass them out to the guys who wanted them.

They may get paid, but I assure you that the job is one where they earn every cent... take care of your linemen when you can. ;)
