gf’s Chrysler 200 needs a tstat at 55k miles. I figured that much. But it has a power train warranty. So figured I’d let the stealership verify and replace. Yay I don’t have to get cold and nasty.

But oh, apparently it’s not covered..... If that housing springs a leak, life blood leaks out. Dead power train.... I get things attached to the engine not being covered. PS pump goes, PT still safe. AC goes, PT safe. But the way the service writer attempted to explain it, it’s only internals and such.

Then gave me the “deer in the headlights” when I questioned computers and modules. It just shows him on the computer if the work to be done is a warranty or not. So I politely asked for a copy of the description and details of the Chrysler power train warranty. Just so I can know in the future. Which he says they can’t get or some rubbish.

At which point I politely excuse myself before I get mad at the guy and allow the gf to pay for them to verify what I knew already. $450 for a dang tstat R&R! Makes me figure it’ll be really fun and impossible to get to at that price.... yay me...

Should have known I’d have to work on the dang thing when she bought it...

Rant off.

Bad tstat can eff some stuff up. You could keep driving it until it *is* covered by warranty... just sayin'

That's true. But I don't roll that dice game. Not my style. Plus a gamble regardless.

Plus they have proof in the database that it came in, was diagnosed, and repair was turned down;)

I knew I had seen the tstat listed in the extended warranty somewhere....

Turns out it was in the one for my Ford ranger... Much more comprehensive with some easy grey areas.

Looking at this Chrysler tstat. Yep it's gonna be a pain to get at. Kinda wish I still had alldata access lol. But I bet I can do it in 2-3hrs. I'm kinda rusty as I don't run beaters at the moment and don't have all tools at my disposal anymore. But still beats the dealer bill:confused:

Biggest problem with the TStat is the damn housing bolts. I broke one off in my 2002 Ram 1500 years ago and I'm STILL gun shy about touching those bolts! I had to replace the whole damn front engine assembly because it wouldn't drill or tap out. All I did was put my socket on the thing and touch the ratchet...CLICK...I knew exactly what happened!

Yep. 2015. Just got done looking at that. It wasn't with the owners manual.
Section 2.4E only listed cooling system components are water pump and housing. LAME.
Even if I could have found a grey area. FCA says they will stand behind their dealers as all warranty issues are decided at the dealer level.
Which I translate as FCA warranty sucks.

Corporate pays them for the work and parts, your next purchase is decided on how the dealer handles your warranty concerns.

4cyl engine?

Yeah but they don’t make near the profit on it:rolleyes: I know there’s a whole pile of reasons all dealers are reluctant to do warranty. But I’ve never quite grasped the nuances of why it’s so convoluted or difficult to have a warranty issue covered.

Next gen up from that but pretty much the same procedure. Thanks

Most dealers suck, especially after you have bought a vehicle. The dodge dealer in Sanford sucks donkey nuts, and I won’t go back in that place. The one in Burlington does as well. I needed help getting the locking lug nuts off of my truck and they told me it would be at least four hours before they would be able to help, with two guys sitting at the counter. All I needed was them to use the master set and break them loose, and I wasn’t asking for it for free. Drove right down to the dodge place in Greensboro and one of the service writers grabbed a master set and popped them off with no charge.

Dodge dealerships used to be all about their 5-star rating. Huge difference between a place with the 5-stars and one without. HUGE...pronounced “you-dge.” The first vehicle I ever purchased was an 02 Ram 1500 from a sheisty non-5-star dealership in FL. They kept going on and on about making sure I give them a good review and they’ll make it worth my while if I do give them a good review (this was pre-internet reviews...the review went straight to Daimler-Chrysler HQ). All kinds of baloney sh!t with the purchase, including them telling me I had to bring the truck back as they couldn’t qualify me (found out they ran me through 5 or 6 banks, mutilating my fledgling credit at the time). Dad about went down there and strangled the guy—got me a much better loan through his credit union instead.

Several years later we bought a Jeep for the wife from a big deal 5-star dealership in Orlando. Damn near effortless, no shenanigans.

If/when/maybe I ever buy another FCA vehicle, I’ll be looking for the stars.

Oh. For the final update. $40 tstat assembly, a gallon of coolant and two hours of my time. Saved the woman a pretty penny:cool:

Pretty straight forward job actually. So further bs about dealer prices. Service writer was saying removing vehicle intake etc. Was needed for why the price was so high:eek:

Um no. Intake tube. Yes. Loosen two clamps, remove. More room could be had by removing the TB assembly I presume but I didn't need to;)

The part that makes me not wanna do it again is just one bolt. Lower right as you face it. It's a blind bolt and coolant hard line runs right in front of it:mad:. No real room to get a finger in there to help line up a wobble head (prolly the reason to remove the whole tb assembly) but tapping the hard line down a 1/4" or so a small mirror to get a view of the bolt head and fighting the no space with a "electrical tape specialed" wobble head:cool: had it out in 40 minutes. Back in in 20:D

Having done it now I can prolly do it in 1.5 hours total but I don't want to do another. But would to save $400 bucks from a dealer doing it.....

Feel your pain. Seems like my wife’s foresters radiator just sprung a leak. Won’t know for sure till Monday though. If it needs a new one it’s gonna cost 550.00. Has only 46,000 miles on the thing. No offense but I expect that on American cars but not on a Subaru.

Lemme guess. Not part of the power train warranty..... Good luck. Hope you can find a good independant ship if you can't diy.

No offense here. But Subie kinda lost me after they got HUGE.

The final nail was the debacle of brand new cars eating quarts of oil between changes but Subie trying to claim it was reasonable consumption...

I could try to do it myself but it would either never work again or be able to launch into the future. Luckily I have a good mechanic who I trust.
They have been known to have issues with their head gaskets and the previous two I have owned leaked oil but one had 180,000 on it and the other 190,000 before I decided to trade them in. They paid for themselves and put very limited money into them over the combined 25 years I owned them.

Lol I get that. Glad you have a trusted tech. I do 95% of my own repairs. The one shop I used to trust for things I didn't want to mess with. Has gone down hill. Parts changers abound, true diagnosticians are as rare as hens teeth.....

Yeah, the head gaskets on Subie boxers are prevalent enough that I know guys who specialize in them specifically around here lol.

The oil burning issue I speak of was sometime around 2013-15 where new Subies were eating oil like a 300k mile one "may". Most people wouldn't think to check the oil in their vehicle at all, ever. But even those who may didn't think to check their 5k mile Subie.

After it became known by the general populace that they consumed enough oil to make the low oil light come on before 3k oil change intervals. Subie claimed losing something like two quarts In that time frame was "normal" even on a brand new vehicle.

The way the brand handled the issue and tried to explain it away really irked me. After enough lawsuits and complaints, they finally issued a recall and fixed the problem.

This was also around the time the outback got HUGE dimensionally. These things combined to make me decidely less likely to care about Subaru.

Oh and for the sake of saying it. I had zero input on the love of my life picking up an effing Chrysler model anything:oops:
