I’m sick of hearing gun owners say……

Meh. A clip and a mag are 2 different things that do something different. A CHP *IS* a CCP. I see it as someone getting upset that I call my truck a GMC instead of a Sierra HD Denali Crew Cab whereas the mag/clip are more like the people that call any SUV a Jeep.

worked with a guy who had a suzuki 4wd that he called a jeep, drove me nuts.

Words are important.
If a person can't even say what they mean how am I supposed to hear what they mean?

Suppressor no because NFA classifies a Suppressor as a Firearm. your CHP is for Handguns ONLY
I know it’s classified as a Firearm.

I’m still curious if I opted to carry my Maxim 9 on my hip, would any cop write me a ticket (or arrest me)...and would a prosecutor take the case...and would a jury convict me.

The Maxim is one unit, but does have two SNs. One for the pistol, one for the silencer portion.

Just always one of those things I ponder.

And my truck AR pistol is suppressed. I don’t lose sleep over it. The one the wife uses is not. I’m not wanting her to have to try and explain it.

Agree,

We have a whole thread going on stuff people say that irritates us. This one never really bugged me that much because I hear it from multiple places and locations, and dont know what all states call theirs.
I looked for it before posting. Searched, went through News and Views, all the off topic stuff, all the permission only subs...probably went past it but I struggled.
If a mod feels inclined to move this there I'd have no worries.

Absolutely thank you.
I saw that thread Terry started, but I didn't think it was the same one.
Apparently I know the CHP, but little of anything else.

And you mugs...leave my starlings alone. My little bug eating buddy's. nom nom

"Weapon" is what gets me. It not a damn weapon till it is used in such a manner.

My firearms is just that, a firearm. I may choose to use my firearm as a weapon. May also choose to use a can of soup.

This is a good one but "weapon" makes me cringe less than "platform" or "system"

Or the term “running” as opposed to just using. Mostly spoken by pasty tactitards who have spent far too much time watching YouTube Gun gurus. If you are a seal delta force special edition paratrooper sniper elite...maybe say it. But if you are standing stationary at an indoor range shooting platter sized patterns on a man sized target at 10 yards...you ain’t “runnin yer gun.” So ease your Rambo and just shoot.

Pedantry bothers me. It marginalizes new people and makes them feel unwanted.

CCP. Concealed Carry Permit. Nope. Can't get one.
CWP. Concealed Weapons Permit. None of those either.
CCW. Concealed Carry Weapon. I'm not even sure what this means.

But you can get a CHP. Concealed Handgun Permit.

"But you know what I mean."
Yes I do. I also know what you mean when you say 30 round clip. Or when you say close the boarder.
Those are points of semantics and spelling...a 4th grade english class mistake.

But CHP is quite different. It carries a legal definition that if misunderstood can put you in jail and probably lose your ability to conceal carry anything ever again.
Kentucky has a CWP. You can carry concealed all manner of weapons...knives, batons, even brass knuckles.
NC is very specific, and they mean it. Concealed HANDGUN Permit. Handguns only. No knives, swords, nun-chucks, or bad breath.
Most starling I suppose, is guys here who actually have a NC CHP, and continue to refer to it as every other thing.
Yeah I know, big deal. We know what they mean.
But do they know what they mean? What other off-the-cuff gun stuff are they telling people?

Sorry, I'm on this today. Yesterday I had to explain to a newbie that when someone else told them to get a CCP, that it is not a CCP. They thought it meant knives and baseball bats included.
This might be the 9th time I've had to clarify the term to a new gun owner, and that in this case, words matter.

If you don't know what you got or what you can get, I'd suggest to just remain quiet on the topic and instead just go with a 30 round clip is standard capacity.

You got to get a different hobby man.

The most annoying thing I have ever heard was my veteran father in law talking about how anything you can hold is a weapon and it is only a gun if it is on a ship. If my brother in law said gun instead of weapon he was corrected. It blew my mind.

OK, ill play. I hate it when people say Labtop instead of laptop. Also there is an R in library. It isn't libary.
Jibbirsh. No such words are spoken by mouth-breathing gun owners!

Similar thing is a Driver's License in NC. Or Drivers License. You are a driver. You get a license. It is a Driver License. Look at it.

But we all know what is meant by a concealed carry permit, drivers license, Honda, and a "book is entitled." I have a niece who has told me several times she wants to get her "conceal & carry" license. Each time I have asked, "Do you mean a Concealed Handgun Permit?" And she just says, "Yeah" each time.

Let's just say your riding your Honda down to the DMV to get your Drivers License renewed.

Booger we call these people "DeltaNinjaSeals" at Apex Defense group . This is the ultimate goal for all tactifags. To have all the gear to go full DeltaNinjaSeal.

Why? Do you think either of you gains anything from repeating the exchange?

Yes, and I will repeat my statement every damn time she says "conceal & carry." I have the defect that makes me watch Gunsmoke reruns, listen to Bee Gees live concerts and read "All Creatures Great and Small" over and over again. The same defect that makes me scan the Handguns for sale of trade threads here as if the next purchase will be the "one." So, yeah.

A few years back, when I started getting into 2/3 gun tactical shoots, I had a moment where I was leaning towards going DeltaNinjaSeal myself. I do have a battlebelt (cheap one) and all that goodness. But quickly realized that while it was very nice to have, and would be good "inu gunfit"...the chances of me getting to it quickly was pretty low. The far more realistic "battle rattle" for me is a spare mag shoved into my underwear while I banzai semi-naked out of the bedroom at 2am. Problem is, finding ranges that will let me "train like I fight" based on that dress is difficult.

How do you think your niece feels about being condescended to every time she approaches you about the subject? Do you think this attitude makes her more or less likely to go ahead with getting her permit?

Except, I don't believe that is a Honda?

I really hate it when people talk about being free all the time and won't let everyone else be free.

Anxiously awaiting the fall out from that one.
This forum, if anything, is proof that people are completely allowed to be free to be whatever they want to be, however they are also free to be criticized for their behavior as well.

Personally, on the subject of correcting people, I feel there is a way to educate people on proper usage of terms without coming across as pedantic. And there is a point we have to realize that not everyone has a desire to be as knowledgeable on certain subjects as we are.

Totally agree. You can explain something to someone, but you can't make them understand it.

A lot of people don't (or won't) realize that being pedantic has the opposite effect of what they claim they're after. Sometimes slang is just slang, vernacular dialects sound weird if you don't speak them but in the end the MEANING is the same.

No doubt, but a difference needs to be drawn out from when you are in casual conversation and when you are in a direct tutorial. If I am casually talking with friends and someone says "I saw this guy on the news shooting and he swapped his clip and just kept going"...I probably wont say anything. But if I am at the range with someone who either should know the difference, or is a new shooter I am helping and they say "How do I put in the clip." then that is a teaching moment. I may correct them once or twice more, but I wont let them using the wrong term we all understand turn them off from shooting because of it.
