My Ford is filled with these integrated design pieces. Instead of having a $25 actuator die in the power lock system, they've put that $25 part inside a $500 single unit. Crap plastic drive gear breaks? Yep, toss the whole unit!

The driver's door lock system failed last year but I figured out how to bypass the faulty sensor and just make it work, but it can be opened/closed with a key so it's not a big deal. The rear doors, no keys, so if you don't have a working power lock there you can't get in.

Ugh. At least the aftermarket replacement unit is only $250, a mere 10x what it would cost me on my old Toyota.

On the plus side... yea there is no plus side.

Reactions: Me.
I had to have a whole module replaced like that when the failure was only a $2 part on a Sears washer thirty five years ago. I remember lamenting to the Sears service tech about the repair being half the cost of a new washer. His reply, “What can I say. Made in America.”

So this isn’t new, unfortunately.

I’ve got a good one for you. On a Peterbilt the power windows quit working. Switch is good, 2 wire coming out of the motor and I can jump power and make it work so the motors good. Back to the switch there’s 14 wires coming out of this switch and only two at the actual window motor, weird. Call Peterbilt and there’s a door module somewhere in the cab for each door. The only thing power in the door is the windows, why the hell does it need its own computer?

They aren't sealed either, and water does get to them. Was a time a couple relays got the job done just fine, with less wire.

Can you use a good gear from the other unit to have a new gear 3D printed?

There were no broken gears that I could find. The binding / failure seemed to be inside the solenoid itself, and it was totally sealed with epoxy. Tried to get it open, but it wouldn't be any use once I got it that way (or 0% chance to get it back together again).

I'm back in business!

2 hours, and just under $250 for the part from autozone (duralast brand, seemed to be the most recognizable of the 3rd party names but that doesn't really mean squat). I found a 15% off coupon online that actually worked, quite shocked about that. Saved me from having to get the unit off eBay, if I was wrong I figured it was worth the extra to be able to take it back to a physical store, but with the coupon that insurance cost me nothing.

The most time consuming / stupid / shouldn't have done item here was trying to find the part on the Ford web site. Even with the damn part number off the side of the unit it wasn't coming up correctly. Their 'chat' function just has some dude take your information and then a few hours later a parts guy calls. By the time he did call I already had the part ordered elsewhere and it showed up in a day even with the "free" shipping option right to my door. No weeks of waiting and two trips to the dealership needed. It's like the dealer doesn't even want to try in modern times.

I've had 3 different brands of vehicles have the switch that turns the interior light on an off go bad at less than 60k... All this is in that door latch assembly now in most brands. 2 of them were under warranty and 1 wasn't.

When do we start the rioting... er I mean peaceful protest where we burn stuff... at Ford HQ?
