I just won an auction for a 10.5" Super Blackhawk in .357 Maximum. I was really trying to not add any new chamberings to the collection, but I have lusted after one of these for a very long time.

Now I gotta order brass, dies & a couple pounds of 4227 & 1680. I've got a bunch of 178gr LSWC & 180gr LWFN, but gonna order some gas-checked 200gr WLN to play with too.

Ought to be an absolute hoot to shoot. Supposed to be pretty soft shooting while propelling 180gr & 200gr to 1600-1800fps.

Pics once the gun & new grips (coming with fugly Pachmayrs) arrive.

Well understand is too strong a word, but you at least come to expect these sorts of threads. Immediately when I saw the thread title, sub forum, and author I knew there was going to be a "hey I bought an odd ball caliber" sort of post...

Tom knows me too well. :D

I'm a confirmed .41Mag nut, so this isn't that big a stretch for me. I came into some 'surprise' money & was torn between either a TALO 6" GP-100 or the case colored, octagon barrel Henry .357 carbine. Always wanted a Max though & just for grins checked GB & for once, my finances lined up with availability & another grail gun is on its way.

It's all good. I've got 500pcs of Starline brass, 2lbs of 4227, 2lbs of 1680, dies & 200 of those 200gr LWNs on the way.

I could've been normal & gone for a .45LC (which I like a whole bunch) or even a .480Ruger (which I am oddly fascinated with), but the startup costs wouldn't have been hugely different. I started reloading to feed my .41Mags, so having to reload for the .357Max is a non-issue & it'll be fun to load up max effort 180gr loads in both .357Mag & .357Max to compare.

I know it's completely ridiculous & doesn't do anything my .41s don't do, but that's not the point, is it? @BatteryOaksBilly made a comment about seizing the moment & to not keep putting off the things you want, 'cos there might not be a 'later'. Caught a break & finally decided I had wanted one of these for long enough.

For comparison purposes- .357Max on the left & .357Mag on the right.

We've done a lot of work here on .357 Max. Running 110s at over 3,000 FPS in a little Handy Rifle. 200 Cast Performance gas checks at 2,000 fps. I wish you were here right now, we'd bust some off.

You need dies? I think I got a set layin around if you want them.

I think I have a couple lbs of 1680 ( I'll have to confirm) you can have. figure a way to get them to you.

Hahaha!!! That would be super cool. Where you at in Randolph? I'm just in LA & would gladly come get it.

Much appreciated, but I've already got a set of (non carbide) dies, but I wanted a set of nice carbides for those crazy 1.605" cases.

The bad thing is, I know myself well enough to know my OCD's gonna kick in & I'm gonna have to have the 7.5"er as well, along with a .357Max Handi Rifle to go with 'em.

And I still don't have a levergun companion for my .357Mag Blackhawk... :D

Enabler! Hahahaha!!!!

The last couple years have been awesome for me, regarding picking up grail guns. Let's hope that trend continues for a spell.

2-3" Smith probably not a bad idea since you're going to have all these .357's! But the .357 sure is wicked out of longer barrels.
This might lead you to an appreciation for .38 special as well.
You'll want the Handi rifle threaded, cuz .38 is super fun suppressed, as you are probably keenly aware already.

Edit: I'll check the dies, I don't think they are carbide.

I got 2 and around a half pounds of A1680
I'm in Franklinville, about 5 miles east of Asheboro.
We'll figure a date and time.

Sounds good. Been through there several times. I work Fr - Su, but my schedule's wide open otherwise.

I'm waiting on a range report.

Happy shooting

I just realized Henry is doing .357Mag Single Shots for reasonable $$$. I'm a huge Henry fan, after getting my mitts on one of their .41Mag leverguns & I'm thinking cutting one down to 16.5" or 18" & reaming to a Max would be too much fun.

Gratuitous shot, since I haven't put one up in this thread yet-

Even noticed there are a couple of 7.5"ers on GB & I haven't even shot this beast...

In response to the title of the post...……

You cant lose something you don't have!

I've bought all kinds of stuff I wish I hadn't while drinking in front of the computer...

Enjoy the hand cannon!

That's a fact, brother & trust me, I quit lookin' for the damned thing years ago. @rantingredneck & a few others on here know beyond the shadow of a doubt that my user name is not an affectation. Lol! Once I figured out I wasn't like the other kids, I embraced that shit & ran with it.
