I want an SBR 9 mm bolt action rifle. UPDATE: All Done!!!

Lathe is being delivered to work tomorrow. It made it to the UPS distribution center on Wednesday last week, but the brain trust there sat on it and never called me to schedule the delivery. I had to call the 800 number two times today and they finally forwarded my call to the morons at the hub.

I'll haul it home tomorrow evening. We have a short work week so I should be able to do setup and break-in...and start f'ing up some metal by the weekend!

This project. I shortened one of the stocks for the upcoming stamp approval. I tried the lazy minwax method of refinishing the crap wood. I have some grain texture throughout as of now. Going to hit it heavy with sandpaper tomorrow and try to smooth it out some. I'll give it one more shot and just run with whatever I end up with.

EDIT: I uncrated this at work today. Going to haul home tomorrow hopefully.

I had to modify some action bolts to get it to bolt into the stock. That is done and I have it all bolted together and functioning! The barrel that a fellow turned for me fit well. I had to kiss the chamber with a reamer to the tune of about .004" for it to close on a go gauge, but that was very close considering I didn't send the action to him. I'm really impressed with that. The leading edge of the feed ramp was simply lowered some and polished up. It feeds the Fiocchi flat nose 158 subs very well. I'm going to shoot it some with some different ammo and then coat it with Moly-Resin. I hope to get that done by this weekend.

Some test shots of subs and the Griffin Rev 9 suppressor. Ignore my chillin' clothes. lol.

I'm all done with updates on this one. Thanks for following along!

Cool project!
I know it's a dedicated host but I cant help but wonder what 9mm major 124gr would clock from that long barrel.

Hey I joined just to talk to you because I'm building one of these myself. I have been looking at these TCM bolt actions for about 3 years and they've just started shipping them after a dry spell so you are getting into this just at the right time. I was able to get the new tactical version SKU 51110, that has an adjustable stock. I made a youtube video if you'd like to check it out.

I'm in the Raleigh area and would prefer to have a local gunsmith help me with my conversion, so I'd love to hear who did yours? Also what length did you pick? I'd like to have it 12", but that would mean I have to cut the stock and it's a synthetic stock. I'm not sure if it's hollow or what?

@LongLeafLad
First off, Welcome to the board!

I saw that tactical version when I was looking around on Gunbroker. I ended up with the two wood stocked versions. One had a pic rail and drilled/tapped holes and the other only has the grooves at the top of the receiver. I'll have to by something for it when I get around to converting it. I ended up going with 9.75" as the barrel length. I had to cut off about 3.5" of the stock for that to happen. Wasn't an issue with the wood stock. Yours will be more complicated, I think. I did a Contender fore end one time but it was solid plastic and was easy to chop.

I couldn't find anyone local to do the barrel for me. I had a guy do it that posts on AR15.com. He's a regular dude that doesn't have his FFL so I couldn't send him my receiver. I sent him my take-off barrel, some receiver measurements , and a barrel blank and he made the barrel for me. There was another guy on there that was working on a Savage-like barrel nut that would let us install a barrel and set headspace like with the Savage rifles. I'm planning on going that route on the second rifle. If you want the info for the guy that made my short barrel, let me know. I'll pass it along to you.

I shot mine at 50 yards yesterday using a bipod off the back of my 4-wheeler (not very stable) and was only managing 3" groups with subsonic round nose Fiocchi ammo. The trigger really needs work! I'll pop some pins today and see if there's anything I can polish to smooth it out. I have a ton of other ammo to try too. I'm hoping at least some of the subs will group a little better. Probably should shoot it without a suppressor as well to see how much that affects it.

Glad to be here and thanks for the warm welcome! Yes please pass on the Smith info although I don't think I'm equipped to remove my barrel or the other required work. think I'll be satisfied with just 9mm. I'm looking at a Leupold 4x fixed rimfire. These rimfire scopes tend to have a 50yd parallax so that should be good for 9mm.

On your accuracy I would expect subs to get better accuracy. I had read from precision .22 LR shooters that subsonic .22 is more accurate because the supersonic sound wave can disturb a round's flight path as it falls below the speed of sound. 9mm operates at similar velocities close to the speed of sound so I imagine this would apply.

Let us know how she shoots! What barrel did you go with?

LongLeafLad, I'm sending you a message with the barrel guys contact info.

I went with a Green Mountain barrel blank and the fellow turned it to the dimensions I requested. Pretty much followed the factory 22TCM contour, but made it a lot shorter. The ammo I'm shooting is new to me. I had Fiocchi in the past but it had a flat nose. This stuff has a round nose. I need to dig through my stash and try out some different stuff.

That stock looks like it was designed for irons. Zero Cheek comb. Maybe a riser would help with check weld?
Cool project! Hopefully you can get it grouping 1" at 50yds, that's about what my SBR 77/357 will do with 220gr .358 subs with lil' gun.
