If the weather holds, I was thinking of taking a few days off and going for a ride. I sorta need a destination or I don't get very far, so what's something interesting to go ride that's within a day of RTP?

I was thinking the NRA museum would be a good destination, but it looks like it would be a traffic nightmare getting in/out of the area, and being that close to a gun-free zone scares me.

Go the mountains of WV and camp out for the night.

Also, I can send pics of my Buell sportbike loaded up to do just that.
I had three days of clothing, tent, sleeping bag, extra shoes etc and still had a blast running up the roads going there
From where you are it shouldnt be but maybe 6 hours of riding, not bad.

I was there on a motorcycle trip with my son a few years back. Fairfax is outside the beltway and traffic is not bad at all( or it wasn't when we were there ).

There is also the indoor range, you could get in some trigger time.

Black Mountain area of Georgia... Hit up Foxfire Museum in Mountain City, GA...

We took an overnighted to Ocracoke last year and really enjoyed it. There’s a nice little campground called teeters on cemetery road that was pretty cheap. I want to go to Gettysburg on my bike, and check out the Harley plant in York, probably be next year though. Also planning a trip to wheels through time in the future.

I've done that exact trip twice. Interstate going up, just to get there, then Skyline Drive / Blue Ridge Parkway on the way back. First time did it solo, second time with my son.

If it were me I would take US 64 to western NC, once you get here you have your pick of Blue Ridge Parkway between Asheville and Cherokee, NC 28 from Bryson City to Franklin and back over Wayna Bald Road and the Nanthala Gorge. Been told this loop is better than the Dragon.
Road to nowhere in Bryson City is interesting, not to long and has local history. US 441 over mountain into Tenn. is a good ride but gets a lot of traffic in Summer and fall.
Base out of Cherokee, Sylva or Bryson City.
Plenty of hotel, Bed and Breakfast, cabin space available. Calhoun House B&B here in Bryson City is good, we put family up there for daughter's wedding last May.
Walk to 2 local breweries.

I do know it's all about the riding but a ride up to the AFF Tank Museum in Danville VA is well worth it if you haven't been. From there, you have an endless choice of nice mountain roads to traverse.

That looks crazy, but I think it would be a good first stop on my way elsewhere.

The tank museum is posted though.

I did one camping trip on my KLR, and have done a few car camping trips since then, but am in no way ready to do that now. I have the gear, but not the mental fortitude.

When riding a motorcycle it's the journey, not the destination. You don't always have to have a place to go. Just ride and ride and ride. Refuel and ride some more

I always need somewhere to go, even if it's not that important. If I don't have a destination, I end up coming home really fast.

I used to ride from SFO to PHX every christmas; the wife's family was there so she would fly home and I would follow on the bike. Good times.

That's what heated gear is for! Early spring and late fall are the best times to beat the traffic in the mountains.
Not every one has that fancy electric riding gear. I spend most of my money on guns. The sun can heat my big butt. I do love riding through Pisgah forest and then on to the parkway to mount mitchell.

Weather here in Charleston has been great these past couple of days. I would vote for a back roads trip, stay at hotel off of the Isle of Palms Connector with a couple of decent restaurants/bars in walking distance, and a quick ride to IOP.

Ride up to Willville and camp then spend the next day exploring the backroads in the area.

Riders Roost is another good spot to stay and explore the local backroads.
