If there was ever any doubt about the lethality of 22LR along with a bit of local history

Hey, I still have my first "real" gun from about thirty years ago. An original Marlin Glenfield with the squirrel stock and first version 18rd magazine. Later versions had shorter mags.

got one just like it I bought it from Sky City for 49.99 with scope

Using a 22lr as a sniper rifle is like hunting dangerous game......... Range is limited, shot placement is VERY IMORTANT and if those two conditions are met....... very effective.

I cant remember for sure....... but either Israel or the US during one of the middle east campaigns used a silenced 10-22 in urban areas. I think I remember seeing some type of plastic "bump stop" to reduce the bolt noise..... I want to use the name Hush Puppy?
Found it

Best Products?! Haven’t heard that name in a loooong time. My dad worked there at one point. Didn’t know they ever sold firearms either, but I knew of them in NJ so those locations probably didn’t.

Not familiar with the 10/22 you’re talking about but I do know that “Hush Puppy” was the name given to the first suppressed pistol used by SEALS, S&W model 39.

The urethane bumpers in 10/22’s are now a super common mod, replacing the steel pin. I wouldn’t be surprised if that started with the mil trying to quiet it down.

Yep, the MKII is a fine 22 in an aftermarket stock and an aftermarket trigger. Very accurate. I have mine in a Boyds.

To be perfectly honest, the lethality demonstrated in this incident is not impressive.

Leathality is not the immediate goal though, a BG dieing in the ER an hour later does not stop him from killing you beforehand so it's still a poor defensive caliber.

Unless it's from one of these. :D

Thanks for the link, I was looking for supporting articles!

Israel uses 10/22s to wound rock throwing Palestinians. Sometimes they miss an extremity and the rock thrower is killed.

A long time ago I met a French-Canadian character with some pretty bad scars on his face and one arm. He said he poached game back in Canuckland with a .22 shot to the head (deer) and was surprised by a bear while standing over one of his kills. The bear disputed the kill with him so he shot the bear in the head from not much more than arms-length distance but unfortunately for Pierre it didn't die immediately but managed to rake his face, shoulder and arm deeply. But, the bear did die. That crazy guy cackled with laughter when he told me the story.

USSF used silenced subsonic 22 in Vietnam on an experimental basis around 1966 or 1967. After one or two tries they gave up.

Not sure if the concept was ever resurrected.

Gentlemen, let me add I called BS on this as well until one of my neighbors at Ft Carson enlightened me many moons ago.

The 22lr may be only practical/useful in urban environments, but it has a use, and can certainly take people out of the game. Especially with the Aquila SSS.

My .$02

(Added) The Russians did not add a 22 to their armory for a scare tactic...

I read a book on it years ago, i forget which one, but the Author added that they had to shoot the enemy in the face with the suppressed .22 and still many times it didn't stop them. I'm not arguing the lethality of .22 as I know of people killed with a single shot to the right place, but I'll never forget that book. That author hated them.

IIRC: Jeff Cooper advocated it for riot control. A concealed shooter hitting the leaders in non lethal spots were what he suggested. I can’t remember which book it was in.

Edit: It was in To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth.
