I have a job that means walking frequently, often for long distances over crap terrain. Lately, my left heel has been hurting like a sumbitch, and the other day, I noticed how absolutely loose it was in the heel, like, to the point of my heel slapping against in the inside.

Well, this weekend I got to looking at the tag sewn inside, and damn if it ain't a EE/Wide fit shoe and the other is medium (the width I wear). I pointed it out to my wife today, and she asked to see both boots, and not only is it a wide, it's damn size bigger. She asks me if I didn't check both shoes when I bought them (expensive Rocky boots) and I say why would I do that, the size is written on the side of the box. That answer earned me a dismissive chuckle and a pat on the head while I jammed two spare insoles into the left boot.

I wear a size 14.....AA width. I have never walked out of a shoe store without trying them on first.

Because there are folks out there who have different size feets, One different than the other that is, and they go into stores and get what they need and put what they want together. That's why a lot of clerks will take them out of the box and check them.

I googled 14AA shoe, and I'm betting Tim can pick up a dime on a hardwood floor with his toes.

Id be taking them back to the store. We take it for granted that the clerk actually did their job and checked the sizes on both before boxing them up.

You lost any credibility you had with the part about expensive Rocky boots.

I do however have a solution to make your foot better conform to your lovely boots..

I tried a couple of models of Rocky duty boots in the fd. I didn't have them long enough to worry about durability, most uncomfortable things I have ever had on my feet minus maybe the Thorogood garbage.

I'm hooked on Salomons now, don't care if I have to replace them twice a year (warranty) they are extremely comfortable 24/7 in the bush.

How do you handle your shoe shopping? You have to buy two pair at a time or do you cheat?

Did you use a credit card to pay for them, most cards have buyer protection and returns when the store will not take them back.
Call your card provider and ask them. I saved a customer over $600 on a vanity sink he dropped in the garage.

I could see that. I typically replace the insoles in mine first thing, plus mine are the square toed slip on style. The big selling point for me was the pair that lasted me 3 years, which is a 600% increase in typical boot life for me. I can't get side zip duty boots (tried Thorogood and Bates) to last more than 4 months before the sole just falls off.

Tried on a pair of Georgia Boots and Justin Boots yesterday that felt really nice, but I can't bring myself to drop 150 bucks when I still have a perfectly serviceable, almost matching pair already.

Coworker swore by his Salomons until I watched him step into a footing full of freshly poured cement after I told him it just looked wet on top because of the dew. Cement will apparently just wreck a pair of boots.

I don't even own a credit card. Either way, I would just chalk this one up to a 180 dollar lesson learned. Appreciate you looking out for me though.

While I'll agree on both accounts, I genuinely believed it was, indeed, just wet with dew. Plus, it was DMM, which somehow makes it funnier.

FWIW I wore a pair of 5.11 stormtrooper boots for about 4 years. The soles wore slick before anything else gave up on them. Might give them a try if you can catch a sale.

Wife says never go cheap on shoes since they provide the support of the whole body. She’s a shoe expert I guess because she has over 60 pair.

My wife convinced me to wear flip flops for the first time in my life this year at the beach. I couldn't walk in them to save my life, and eventually stepped in a crock of dog eggs and flung it up the backs of my legs.

Moral of the story: I'll be disregarding wive's opinions on shoes like I do the minutia about their tales of the day.

Flip flops are bad for your back. Also, I wear size 14 and where in the world can I go that keeps them in stock? Seriously.
