The short and the long, is he started his own business in 2003 after the owners sold the business he worked and told him his paycheck was going to be cut in to a 1/3 and they were taking away rebar. Which my dad brought to the business (they had 4 stores in NC and SC) and make the company a ton of money.

My Dad sells commercial building supplies, mainly products concrete contractor use. We sell to anyone, don't have to be a contractor. Mainly it's vapor barrier, high chairs, wall ties, sonna tubes, expansion joint, insulation, wire mess, wire rolls, anchor bolts, rebar toppers, pike ballers, etc. We can and do get everything from vapor barrier up to roof top access doors.

Fast forward, to 2003 JDS Supply is formed (John, Dustin, Sandra) we are family business with 7 employees 3 of which are my family. I still work part time with them, even though I'm at CAT. Things are changing in that department once we are moved in.

Dad bought commercial land 10 years ago and I've been telling him to go build a building Wasn't until this year that he did. I did all the site drawing, building drawings, etc. If it needed to be drawn in CAD, I did it. Also did 3d model lays outs to up the efficiency of rebar through put. We cut, bend and form up rebar for customers. Doesn't matter how many times someone touches it, you only get paid for it one time.

Finally got Pops to invest in CNC shear line. He's old school and while I understand his thinking we are only getting bigger and need the capacity. When I'm running my mill, he just comes in to his shop and just stands and watching the mill do the work. He won't say it but he's amazed by it. Hell I am to. Funny story, once he bought the shear line I said "well when are you going to visit them and learn the machine"..."Me??...uh no, you are" he said.

Anyway here's the building in it's current state. We were suppose to be moved in by now and me working full time. I love what I do, don't get me wrong..I really do. But to have the opportunity to forge my on way destiny, as cheese as that sounds means more to me. He wants to get in to manufacturing and that's something I do know a thing or two about, but he's very conservative. I would have a lot to learn still. I don't sleep alot because I'm always reading or on Youtube University .

To simply say I'm proud of him is a understatement. Stories he tells of his life a kid growing up, I can't image. He's a great man and a great Dad. I tell him now, even though I'm 30, I wish he would of broke his foot off in my butt more than he did. He just comes back with a smart remark like "you turned out ok.....I guess" with a half smile.

When you get to 10 employees you get to cost average the small business heath plan for age. :D Something I learned when our 2 person "small" business set up in NC.
Older employees will like it. Younger one might not. :D

The fab shop decided, after the fact to make bigger. 30ft on each side.
All the wire mess, expansion joint, rebar, etc are our supplys that we sale.

One of the big fabricators that I know said they hear good things about your business. All I know is, you are in a competitive business right now. It seems that several fab shots have popped up all over the state.

Thank you, if it's near your location I have a idea of who it is.

There's a lot that popped up for sure since my Dad brought it to his previous employer.

I can't wait for the building to be finish.

Spent Friday night and all day Saturday prepping concrete for a Guard Seal. It's allows concrete to be buff vs a pure seal you can't.

For the guys that lift weights, my arms feel like leg day...ugh. haha But it looks great. Flooring starts tomorrow and finishing gathering parts to get air supplies to install the air system this weekend. Not looking forward to that.

Machines started to show up.

Dad told me to find him a air compressor for the usage we will need it for. Lot of math involved, in the end he wasn't expecting this.

Dad “biggest air compressor I’ve ever seen”

Me : “you’re welcome”. Follow by Tim Toolman Taylor grunt

Wait till he sees it piped up :p

haha, that's this weekend's project. I put a lot of time in to this air system...what's worst than it not living to it's duty cycle is having Pop's being mad at me and costing the business money.

Wow, haven't updated this in a long time it feels like.

Biggest update is after the hurricane Dad and I pulled the trigger to move everything over to the new shop. Why? hurricane slowed work down enough to allow us to. Working 40+ hours at CAT, and min of 35-45 hours at Dad is killing me. Friday-Wednesday was 6am to midnight. Didn't kill us, so guess we are stronger. Anyway enough talking

We moved in exactly a year for when Dad and I broke ground. Pretty cool to sit back and look at we had accomplished

First customer at the new shop. One of our best customer. What I find pretty cool about this picture, is both our Dad's are in the business (his dad is a contractor who buys only from us) and are really good friends. Both of us have the intent to take over our Dad's business. Maybe we can take the same picture 20-30 years down the road.

Finally cleaning out the old shop and taking down the sign. Been here 15 years
