Inside the New Glock Gen5

For me the only part I like is the removal of the finger grooves. I am not sure why they went this route with all the changes in the internals. In the past Glock has done a good job of keeping consistency from Gen to Gen but I guess that is over. IMHO the changes will help the aftermarket world. People will buy these and people will upgrade them so they will be selling more parts vs people swapping current parts into their new Gen 5. It will take a bit of development but I imagine it will payoff long term.

It's interesting that the striker tip is round on the Gen 5 versus the spear tip on the Gen 1-4s.

Finally, no finger grooves. Looks like they went back to a Gen2 frame with Gen 4 stippling. It's a 2-pin again. Same cut out as my Gen2 just a bit wider magwell bulge. Ambi-slide stop is stupid. Something else to get in the way of my grip... Wish I could get that frame shape in a gen3/4...

I like the rounded nose, but as a G34/G26 shooter I already got that.

The rest looks good to me at first glance. Nothing so strange you're scratching your head, no departure from the established magazines (whew!). Nothing that makes me want to go run out and buy one though which is a bit of a bummer.

I don't understand why they say stuff like "Glock says the Gen5’s will only be offered in 9mm" in the article. Really? You've given up on everything else? And they say no MOS version. Again, no MOS version at launch but come on, why not just say that instead of "never" and then look like a retard when you pop it out in 6 months. Or perhaps they'll think everyone will fall for it and go buy the current one and then buy another when it comes out in MOS or 40 or whatever. Worked for the 42/43 rollout?

Maybe sig can make a P320 that uses glock mags so I can reuse my existing stockpile. :)

I like the flared magwell and lack of finger grooves. Maybe I'll finally get a 19. Or maybe the used 3Gs will be cheap enough I'll readily grind on one... Or I could just keep on living without.

So is Glock going to be making 3 generations of guns concurrently? They won't stop making Gen 3s since those are the only ones they can sell in California.

wanna move some of that mag stockpile?

Nope, been picking up factory mags when they're on sale from $18-20 from midway, brownells, etc. I wanted to make sure I had enough standard cap mags to last me through the next round of low capacity mag bans. We're living in a golden age right now, it's 1992 all over again.... and 1994 is just around the corner.

What are regular people wanting that is at odds with what .gov people want?
Rounded or undercut trigger guard. Gov doesn't care, they just issue guns. Glock could have fixed that crappy squared guard and the didn't. But the CZp10c got it right.

Now's also the time to be stocking up on 80% lowers/frames IMHO.

I wasn't aware perfection needed multiple revisions.

Well, they're just improving on the perfection, obviously.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the Gen 5. At its core it's still a Glock 19, but has parts incompatibilities with previous generations. Part of my attraction to Glock is how simple it is and how you can buy a Glock 19 barrel, trigger, striker, slide lock spring, etc.to run in Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3, or Gen 4. I don't see myself buying a Gen 5 due to parts incompatibilities and the fact that I don't mind the finger grooves.

Unless they find a way to bring back the frying pan finish I won't be a Gen 5 customer. I don't mind the finger grooves so why would I get rid of a gun with a slide that doesn't scratch for one that will.

Supposedly the new NDLC (or whatever it's called) coating is better than the frying pan finish. I know I won't believe it until I see it, though.

If it does prove to be then I may change my tune but I'll have to wait and see. I was tricked before when they changed the finish on the Gen 4. Years ago one of my LGSs told me the new finish was even better than the FPF, you know what they say. Fool me once...

Interesting nobody said anything about the barrel change. In my Gen 2, 3 and 4 that is what I want to change.

A Glock with curves?

A fat ugly chick has curves, but is still a fat ugly chick.

I'm all for losing the finger grooves, but that was all that needed changing from the Gen4 IMO.

Then again, if I was Glock I'd be trying to get PDs and agencies to buy my latest thing in the tens of thousands every few years too.

I was looking forward to a Gen 5 G34, but with all the internal changes, I can't just swap out the the stuff from my Gen 3 G34, kind of puts a damper on getting one for a while.
