Inside the New Glock Gen5

Being the Glock fanboy I am, I'm sure at least one of these will find it's way into my safe as soon as they're readily available at non-idiot price points.

I never did really mind the finger grooves, until I shot a P10c. That CZ really put the older gen 3 and 4 19s to shame, but mags are too expensive, not readily available and the aftermarket support for the P10c is nonexistent. All it really needs is a good set of night sights, but you can't even find those for it yet outside of CZ custom for $140. Plus the fact that I have a bazillion Glock mags makes it hard for me to ever really commit to a new non-Glock striker fired gun.

The gen 4 g19 is about perfect for me and I'll always have a stable of them. But, if the gen 5 markedly improves upon the gen 4, which it appears to do on paper for me at least (no finger grooves and supposedly much better trigger), I'm sure I'll go in for at least 2 19s...

Just handled one that my buddy bought. I like them; feels great without the finger grooves and the finish looks pretty good.

I'm kinda interested in shooting one with the new barrel. Otherwise I'm not that impressed. I still love my G26 Gen 4 ,other than the sorry finish on the slide. It's my EDC !

I bet the people that whined about the finger grooves still won't buy one.

It's been 2 days, no one has gone to TSA to try it out and report back?

I was there today to buy a barrel for my Sig. Took a look at it. Yep, it's a Glock. I'm not paying $10 to shoot it though. I have pistols already that shoot better :p

I believe he says both guns are using a Glock 17 locking block/barrel configuration, but the NFA Review's video make it look like both the Gen 5 Glock 17 and Glock 19s use a Glock 19 locking block/barrel configuration. This means that current aftermarket Glock 19 barrels should work in the Gen 5 Glock 19 and Gen 5 Glock 17 barrels should work in Gen 1-4 Glock 26s and Glock 19s.

I saw that grabagun ad. I'm going to wait to see where the price settles, but I'll probably buy one eventually.

I shot the gen 5 g17 tonight as I'm currently in the market for a full size fun slinger. I fired the gen 4 and 5 side by side. The 5 had a more natural pointing feel but I had a harder time controlling elevation with it. Groups were ok but I think I'm just used to the finger grooves at this point. The 4 shot quite a bit tighter even though I had a slight tendency to pull them a little left when my hands got sweaty. I think I'm going to keep in the search for a gen 4.

Jaybirds got 4 in today. $599 IIRC for the G19.

I carried a G19 for a long time. And this one actually feels better than I remember them. Grip didn't seem as bulky. Not sure which back strap it had in it though. But it didn't feel like a 2x4. So it's like a Glock, only slightly better. lol I'd say they look nice, but they look like a Glock.

Got my gen 5 g19 in hand this evening from my FFL and grabagun:

Some things I like a lot:

-I really like the fact that the smooth face trigger is standard now. The grooved one never really bothered me that much, but it's a nice touch.

-The trigger pull "feels" miles better than my most shot and vetted gen 4 19 (~2500rds or so). It's much smoother out of the box then my broken in gen 4.

-I'm a fan of the new mag baseplates, much easier to get a hold of. Conversely, I bet they're a royal pain in the ass to remove.

-Also a big fan of the orange followers.

-It "feels" slimmer in hand without any backstraps than my gen 4 19s do with the finger grooves. This is probably just a placebo effect of sorts. In my opinion, it does feel more ergonomic w/o the finger grooves than I thought it would. It's still no VP9 or P10c ( the 2 most ergonomic striker 9mms in my opinion) in hand, but better than the finger grove versions of previous 19s.

Some things I don't like:

-Same old crappy placeholder sights

-The cutout on the front strap-not sure how this will affect me when shooting. I have smaller hands, but even for me, my pinky hangs over the cutout.

-The added ambi slide release, just seems on the way to me, unlike the am I controls on the p10c, which are great and out of the way for a righty shooter. I find myself awkwardly sliding my trigger finger in an avoiding manner to not rub the slide release stop on the right of the gun. If there's an oem or Vickers aftermarket strong side only release I'll be the first time get one methinks.

That's all for now, will put a few hundred rds through it this weekend for sure.

I'll also add the new finish on the slide is nice. I bet when the fde/od/bfg/grey/whatever frame versions inevitably come out, they'll look awesome with the new slide finish.

-Also a big fan of the orange followers.

I saw the red followers on a walther or HK or something and how easy it was to see the round count (important for limited stages) and started searching for aftermarket followers for the glock. Few days later... boom, gen 5 colored baseplates. How timely.

-The added ambi slide release, just seems on the way to me

If the lever is gone, will there be a notch in the frame or will it remove nice and 'clean'?

From all the pictures I've seen, it is set up exactly like the left side so there would be a hole in the frame with a raised rib that normally surrounds the release.

I was looking forward to a Gen 5 G34, but with all the internal changes, I can't just swap out the the stuff from my Gen 3 G34, kind of puts a damper on getting one for a while.
That problem was so Gen4 ago...

After I put my Ameriglo Spartans on my Gen4 19 I love the thing. I see no reason to change. Still need to do some trigger work.

I don't see the attraction. The biggest IMO selling point for Glocks is the plethora of aftermarket parts/upgrades that now will not be compatible. For what performance improvement? Still as ugly as ever, lol.

I'm a big Glock fan but will most likely stay away from these for years.

We tried to Put a gen 4 slide on a gen five frame at the store Tuesday, can't be done without changing the back plate, and not sure if it will work then, so all the people who like to change slides and frames around, are out of luck, but they're still selling like hot cakes

I would be willing to bet that very few of the people buying them are looking for inter-generational interchangeability. In fact, I don't think I personally know anyone who switches slides. The same thing happened with the Gen3 to Gen 4 change in regards to barrels and recoil springs not being interchangeable. People bought what they needed to buy to have the setup they wanted and were happy.

Wanna guess why we tried to it to see if it would work

Guy wanted to swap his zev tec gen 4 slide on to a gen five , like I said you may be able to swap out the back plate, but as of yet no definitive answer

I agree, there are a small number of people who really want/need the ability to switch parts, but they are in the extreme minority of the customer base. I just mean they are selling like hotcakes because the vast majority of people want the revised features of the new model and parts interchangeability is a non issue.

I watched the first part of the video... why would you test a brand new model gun with aftermarket mags before you even try it with the factory units it shipped with?

I saw one of G19M at Firepower in Matthews today. Fielding broke it down, showed me some of the differences. Felt great in hand without finger grooves but textured. Really more of a revolver guy, but still have quite a few Glocks. I'll probably pick one of these up.

I played with one at the LGS for a few minutes today while there to pick something else up. Felt like a Glock, and without going back-to-back with a gen 4 I would be pressed to tell the difference in the grip/trigger. My hands seem to fit the gen 4 grooves just fine, so it's not as big of a deal to me as to others.

Having never seen a slide stop on the other side of a glock (ever) I thought it would be more shocking, but it wasn't, seemed very natural.

It's easy for me not to care since I'm a G34 and G26 user. If I was totally in love with a G19 I can see maybe some appeal, but honestly it's not enough to make me want to buy one. Perhaps I'll change my mind after I get to shoot one. @NKD will probably buy one soon enough and then I can test drive it.

Kinda a let down. Glock, go build a damn carbine so I can buy something from you before my G34 wears out.

Hey, we already have Hi-Points and Kel-Tecs. No need for a Glock. :D

I'm aware, my sub2k that uses glock mags is a fun gun to run, but I still wouldn't mind an actual Glock factory carbine of some sort... as long as it used glock mags.

(wouldn't that be ironic if Glock popped out some sort of carbine that used new mags? No wait, ironic isn't the word I want. Stupid. That's the word. Stupid.)

It apparently IS possible to make it even uglier....

Whilst I'm still not exactly certain what constitutes ugliness in a handgun, I will say this about a Glock: when carrying one, folks seem too worked up about how ugly the firearm is to care about how hideous I am.

Put another way, carrying a Glock makes me look good!

Naw, gen 4 is fine for me. I got all the glocks I need!

I've been thinking about replacing the Glock 17 Gen 1 that I sold many years ago. When I fondled a Gen 5 at the LGS that was enough to move me off top dead center. After shooting 400 rounds through my new Gen 5, I can say that I really appreciate the improved trigger and the flared mag well. Other features like the finger groove delete and ambi slide lock didn't matter to me.

300rds through my gen 5 g19 today-pretty much same old boring Glock. No issues with btf or any malfunctions. Holes were made in the target where I wanted them. I noticed the cutout once digging into my pinky a little while doing some fast shooting, just adjusted the grip and didn't notice the cutout again.

All it really needs to be ready for carry or HD duty is 700 more rds through it and better sights. The oem plastic sights have been slightly redesigned on the gen 5s, but man do they still suck.
