Never heard of a garden allotment.
It was started way back, either 1st or 2nd world War I forget which.

The idea was to make parcels of land available for a nominal fee to everyone so they could grow food, even if they lived in an urban environment, as a lot of houses were row houses with doors that open directly to the street and tiny back yards. Councils set aside acreage and cut it up into small parcels and alloted (hence the name) them to people who paid a small amount each year to hold use of the land. Typically it's a small patch of dirt surrounded by narrow turf walkways. Often they have a small shed or lockable box for storing tools and supplies.

My maternal grandfather had an allotment, although he mostly grew decorative plants on his and used it as a place to hide from my truly awful grandmother. They're pretty popular, and when I was still in England were still protected from commercial development and required to be provided by towns and cities.

I had one for a while as a kid, but it was a long way from home by bike so I lost interest.
