Is there a way to have a 22 upper on my standard AR lower?

I've done a little research but its hard to find a straight answer.

Will a 22 upper fit on a 223 AR lower?

Seems a good upper is almost the cost of a whole new rifle.

Certainly. If you have an awesome lower (with a $250 trigger say) and you want the option of 22LR for training, sure. Set up your 22 upper like your regular upper and have at it.

But it’s hard to beat the S&W 15-22 for a basic AR22.

I have used the CMMG conversion in a good 223 AR for 10k’s of rounds. I might have been lucky to get one that was reliable but it was great for short range 2gun/steel challenge kind of shooting. Not very accurate at long range.

I have an AR22 upper. Clearance barrel and bolt for $100 and the other parts I had. It is fine.

But for the last 5 years I have run a 15-22 with a dot and a Geissele trigger in 2gun rimfire and have no urge to change. I am looking for a second one used to shoot 2gun in limited with. Already have the trigger :)

Sure the CMMG .22 uppers work great on a AR lower. I have a S&W 15/22 also and they both work great and accuracy is about the same but the CMMG upper on an AR lower looks, handles and feels more like a true AR. I use Black Dog .22 mags with the CMMG upper but I can even use the 15/22 mags with the CMMG uppr too if I desire.

I have used both of them in Rimfire 2 gun matches and both are very reliable for match use.

I got the M&P .15-22 first, I wanted to make sure I liked the AR before I picked up the 15X. Nice rifles.

Have the CMMG upper on a lower and enjoy it. Since it's a SBR, I get two (or more) SBR's for the price of one.

yeah those uppers are pricey when i can get a nice rifle for that much
If cost is a concern, I'd highly recommend getting a 15-22. You get a complete rifle that is extremely reliable right out of the box.

And if you decide you want more AR parts on it, no problem - I changed out the handguard, stock, grip and trigger with AR parts. Only reason I sold it was because I wanted a pistol AR22, and it wouldn't be legal to chop my 15-22 rifle barrel down to a pistol length. 15-22 is a fantastic AR-style rimfire rifle, full stop. When you factor in the cost vs alternatives, it's a great bargain.

Get one on sale during the holiday season, and I promise you will be very satisfied with it.

Ignore the paracord, that was just to troll WarSport's tactical bungee cord.

And no matter which way you go, an AR-style rimfire rifle is great for bringing newbs or women to the range, and showing them a fun time with an "evil black rifle". And if you go to a range with steel targets, you will get them hooked!

PSA makes a dedicated .22LR upper. Never in stock but find the one you like and get put on the Notify Me list. When it comes in, jump on it. They go for around $349 or so. Well worth it. Works on any mil-spec lower. Flat top or traditional, something for everybody.

I’ve done it all ways...
CMMG drop in
spikes dedicated upper
Custom built dedicated upper based on CMMG kit
M&P15-22

The first two sucked, too finicky and/or unreliable. Kind of wish I never sold the custom upper, it was a 4.5” tuned for Fed bulk suppressed.

The 15-22 is realllly tough to beat as it was designed to be a 22lr, it simply works, and is priced extremely well.

They are not widely know, because their uppers were unobtainium from 2012-2016, but Nordic Components makes an excellent quality 22 upper. Yes it is pricey! I have two and both run awesome with bulk pack. They will start to crud up a little around the 1.5k-2k round count though.

I'd love to find a deal on the 9" version, found several of the 16" at $439.
Nordic makes better than OEM replacement Benelli parts, especially the magazine spring and follower.

Back in 2012 Nordic had a few overuns of short barrels from a Govt agency contract (US Forest Service sticks in my head). I sweet talked my way into purchasing a 6.5" barrel and shorter handguard (9") so that the tip of my Sparrow would stick out of the guard enough to easily take it off and on. The downside is that bulk pack ammo is typically super sonic in any barrel longer than 4". It's not super quiet, but with a 50 round Black Dog drum it is the Giggle Stick.

THAT is what I’d like to top my SBR lower with so it’s got a similar length as my 300BLK (avatar)
