It took 2 years, but all the crayons are accounted for. (Marines pass full financial audit)

Marines pass full financial audit, a first for any US military branch

The U.S. Marine Corps passed a full financial audit for the first time, with the service announcing Friday its fiscal 2023 financial audit received an “unmodified audit opinion” after a rigorous two-year review.

The milestone — something the Defense Department and the other armed services still have not achieved — comes after almost two decades of trying to prepare the Corps’ records and several failed audits along the way.

Along these lines, I had a video pop up in my YouTube suggestions last week that I ended up enjoying watching, but when I first saw the title ("Kerr County Man Has Nearly 50,000 Crayons") I thought it was going to be about a Marine Prepper:

Kerr County man has nearly 50,000 crayons

A better use of time would be how to get all these service members pay up so half of them are not on government assistance for their families. That’s a start at recovering from a recruitment disaster. Not to mention housing allowances have not kept up with the increases under Slow Joe. They had a minor increase that was 1/6th of inflation for housing. $24k for an enlisted man is a joke. Not sure for the hours if that is even minimum wage.

An audit is a good thing, so I am glad they did it (and passed). Now to get the others done. So it's a great use of time.

To your point, I agree. E1 pay is extraordinarily inadequate. "But we give you free healthcare and all of those bennies," they say. Well, yes, but that doesn't alter the fact that the pay has not kept up with COLA and inflation, even with (especially with?) BAH/BAS. E1 at Ft. Hood, OK, I kinda, sorta see how you might be able to make that work. But San Diego? The metro DC area?

I think folks need to realize the military is a blue collar job. Just like minimum wage, don’t stay an E1 and don’t plan for a family if that’s where your decisions keep you. Climb the ladder, do the education, and better your options.
E1 pay is bad, but not if you live in the barracks and have no bills and don’t drive a Hellcat.
They have it so much better now than they ever have. I see it literally every day. No, it hasn’t kept pace with inflation, but neither have anybody’s wages.

I agree that the conditions and pay are better now than they have ever been. But if, if, if. There are some places you can't stay in barracks and the BAH doesn't come close to getting an apartment. You see four, five E1s, E2 crammed into a tiny 2-bedroom apartment in the hood.

If, if, if...they stay in barracks, manage money, have no bills, have no Hellcat at 23% interest, then yeah, it's pretty easy.

Not starting something, just curious. Where can't you stay in barracks or squadbays ?

There are some high expense locations that have more people than barracks availability, that's all. At least on the navy side. You get on a list and move into barracks when they come open. Most of those areas are in California and the peri-DC area. Not sure how it is in other locales.
