It's ON! Squirrel time 2017

Remember the three S’s....
I'm assuming that's hunting related? Sorry, but you're talking to a guy that's never hunted a day in his life...

All I know is crap, shower and shave.

I saw a thread about squirrel hunting and figured this would be the place to ask. I had a buddy call me yesterday wanting to know more about suppressors, and if they worked on 22LR. Has squirrels on his mom's land destroying corn (or a corn pile) or something. Wasn't sure what the options are, although best I can tell most types of squirrels are in season right now.

I hunt on a depredation permit in GA every year to help an adjacent landowner. We approached the local Warden and received his blessing (for me to be the shooter) and that of the Dept. in writing. My land borders his but his issue is on the west boundary and I'm to his east.
His permit specifies 20 to 30 deer to be removed but we rarely reach that number before they get smart and wise to my ways. It usually takes a couple of days for them to be educated and make themselves scarce.

@BigWaylon the term SSS means shoot, shovel, shut up but sometimes it's hard to do. If you don't at least have a hunting license you could get into bigger trouble than what you have now. Discharging a firearm within city limits is one thing but hunting without a license is another. Holler if you need help, I have a nice pellet gun AND a hunting license.....

Yeah, depending on your outlook on things. Here ya go. Take notes cause this’ll cross your mind later.

Shoot
Shovel
Shut-Up

Bella has shown an interest. And she seems to be able to follow them pretty good from tree to tree. She busted outta the house this afternoon on ones ass. So I gave it to her. Let her play with it for awhile before i skinned it. Maybe eventually she’ll bring them to me when I shoot em

Monday morning was pretty dang cold down in my neck of the woods. I deer hunted until about 9am and then wussed out and hung out in my shop for about an hour warming back up. Got bored around 10 or so and went for a walk with the .22 rifle.

As much as I hate to admit that my eyes have changed this much, I sure did have a good time and adding the scope to the rifle has brought back the same thrill I enjoyed as young teenager.

Took an old mid-80s 10-22 that I got in a trade with @mj1angier , and put a Hogue stock on it courtesy of @Studentofthegun .
Game Reaper mount, and a cheap Nikon later, and I am having a blast. Zeroed it in with CCI Standard Velocity.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy killing them with a .410 or 20 gauge, especially early in the season when the leaves are still heavy. But a cold morning with a .22 is hard to beat. So is my wife's squirrel gravy.

Finally getting used to this scope on a .22 deal. (Also known as, I had something really nice to prop on yesterday! LOL!)

One squirrel was shot at about 40 yards and the other one was closer to 70 yards.

Funny story on the last pic.

I have Mondays off. I was hunting a "new" section of woods last Monday when I killed the three squirrels in the post above this one.
After I got back to the house and settled in I realized I had lost one of my 10 round mags. Wasn't sure if it fell out of my pocket or I set it down somewhere.
Yesterday, one week later to the day, I was hunting that same section of woods. I copied my game-plan from the week before. Walk 20 or 30 yards until you see a squirrel, shoot it if I can, if not keep walking about 10 yards and sit down. The squirrel most always comes back out after 5 or 10 minutes, if not, you usually see a different one start moving, and you have a better shot sitting down, propped if I can.

I must have consistent tastes in sitting spots. Second place I sat down at and there was my mag from the week before staring up at me! LOL!

My dad and I used to fish Lake Wylie regularly for crappie. One Saturday morning we headed out to Nivens Creek where we put in at and he bitched the whole way about my mom knocking a Wally Marshal rod and reel into the water the Saturday before. We set up and were trolling Big Allison later that morning when he set the hook and hollered at me to get the net. Long story short, and honest to goodness, the hook on his jig was hooked to the hook on the rod my mom had knocked in the week before! Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't of been there.

I thought that was for more serious issues? For squirrels and such, I figured it would be:

Shoot
Skin
Stew

...or some variation of that.

I notice that the mag you "misplaced" is empty. By design or did the furry little bastids steal the ammo??

By design, and that helps explain how it ended up there.

After the 3rd or 4th wave of squirrel attackers I had to reload. Left the empty on the "root ball". I was straddling the downed tree, hiding behind/propped on the root ball.

That sounds more like a scene from red dawn

5ACAC9E7-4A63-4E9E-9118-9936913D97CE.jpeg I got two this afternoon, lost two more in the process. One got in a old hollow tree, the other moved as I shot and bolted to be lost.

Tomorrow and the 8th will be the last days I’ll be able to squirrel hunt before season ends. Trying to decide on deer or squirrel tomorrow

I hadn’t brought a 22 with me when we moved here bought picked one up now. I’m ready to slay some tree rats. If anyone ever wants company hunting near Raleigh, lemme know.

Both. Duh
Got roped into working tomorrow in Ramseur. If Bill is gonna be around the 8th I may come down and shoot some stuff. Or just come down. You gonna be around or in some crazy place like Chicago? Lol

Close. Bad enough. Charlotte. Lol

Got a couple of greys today. One got stuck in a fork of the tree and it took some clever engineering to get him out.

I've got some in my attic, I need to get rid of them before they tear everything up. Anyone have any ideas?

Rat traps....and fix the hole

You can trap them pretty easy in a live trap. Then fix the places where they are getting in.

Carp, that's huge!!

That one is medium sized. No, really. The season for them ends the last day of December also. And on those Jan & Feb grey squirrel hunts I'll see more of the fox squirrels than grey squirrels.
