Soooo I read the article. Seems he has 7 different Black women opening for him at The Ryman for 7 nights. They named some other guy that was dropped by his agent and then sorta pushed outta country mainstream for having used the "N" word.
Here's MY question....would they run any of these 7 Black women outta country music if somebody showed up with any evidence of the 7 ever using the "N" word?
Yeah...I know...All Supposition..........wellll what are the chances ANY of the 7 have Ever used the "N" word????

I'll admit to not knowing who he was. I'll also admit to wasting about 20 minutes reading that crap.

At least I was eating pan fried ham slices while reading that tripe.

Salt and pepper, fried in grease from this morning's bacon.

They can do it. You know this already.

Isbell is simply a F*&ing amazing songwriter. If this is a total surprise to you, you have not actually paid attention to his songs. And if you thought he was straight up country you don't listen to him either.

And reading through the article, I could probably have a very interesting conversation with the guy. And we likely still wouldn't agree in the end. But sounds like he's more classical liberal even if he uses the word progressive. Most progressives have cut themselves off to any alternative opinion. Classical libs at least entertain ideas they may not agree with.

And what he is actually doing there, regardless of the why, is simply awesome. Corporate country music sucks and sucks bad. I bet he and I would agree on that. And using his influence to push artists out there that are anti establishment or the "type" of artist the corporate country does not want is GREAT for real music. Most of the guys I love listening to would never appear on country radio outside of The Outlaw on Sunday nights or sometimes WNCW on Friday.

Anyone that remembers the early 80's cookie cutter corporate country radio, we are back there again. Kudos to anyone trying to break bro country and tail gate countries stranglehold on radio country.

And I'd probably call that more of a painfully honest opinion (which may not ring as fact to everybody) than woke. Woke is bat guano crazy. I didn't really get that feel. We may not agree. But he's got an interesting take and from an area I'm not from so he's lived a different existence.

I don't know any of the artists. But I can point you to some amazing female black singers doing blues/southern rock.

But the guy referenced in the article is the type of problem child that country radio is normally supportive of. Junk music. Cookie cutter radio stuff. IMO, it's soul less and basically useless. Not arguing that your point is wrong, it probably isn't in some ways. But I don't think his loss was a big hit to real music either. And if I had to guess, I bet their stuff is better than his.

The gate keepers of country music are probably largely wealthy. Largely male. Largely white. With some very likely Jewish guys that tend to be influential in entertainment. And they are the gatekeepers of what is "good country music." And in the current climate they are dead damn wrong about what's good in country outside of maybe 2-3 guys you will hear on radio. The rest they push out on the public for profit, not artistry. Pay attention to who those guys hate. And listen to them.

He married a super liberal woman and that made him go further into retardation. I love his music, I truly believe he’s one of the best song writers ever. But his political views are shit. It is what it is.

Wait until they find out about Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers, and Sturgill Simpson’s political views. They may not be as far left but they lean that way from every interview I’ve seen.

Yeah, it's annoying. Off to Listen to Aaron Lewis and Jamey Johnson.

I try to stay away from musicians political views, but they just can't help telling us they are idiots. Man it's frustrating. Heck, I'm probably wrong about the two above.

I don't listen to contemporary "Country Music" at all, so I have no idea who Jason Isabel is, even though I was in Nashville and in The Ryman literally six days before this "Superstar" sat down in the pews for the photo in the article. He sure seems consumed by himself.

Most music lyrics are nostalgia for something that never existed, especially the closer you get to tradition and roots music. Welcome to artistic reality pal.

While he's belly-aching about the trajectory of "Country Music" I wonder if Jason Isabel even knows who Don Helms is.

You left out Margo Price. She cried when Hillary lost.

Clearchannel ruined country music starting about oh, Achy Breaky Heart? A lot of the crap sound is the modern recording techniques, but there's still the awful songwriting where you have one cheesy hook that's repeated until it's lodged way back in there... ugh. I find Isbell's songs to be "actual art" in that there's some strong feeling there. I just wish he'd get out of the "world bad, I so depressed" kinda vibe and back into the good time music that started what we call country. As for 2a views of artists, it's pretty funny considering the demographic of this forum but I think there's a lot more parallel between the views here and those I hear from reggae and hip hop artists (those musics are also much more politically charged and so firearms come up a lot more too..). Country music has basically turned into Emo with an accent.. I still rock the Hag though.

I dont know much about Isbell's music, and I try to not dig into the politics of folks who I enjoy listening to and watching...Im there for entertainment, not a lecture.

But, being this is an anti-bro country thread, it seems
Here you go with this gem

If his music is good..that's ALL I care about. Music moves me, always has. Remember 9 decades in now. Here's what my take on ALL performance artist is:
SHUT UP AND SING, DANCE, ACT, PAINT, DO WHAT I PAID YOU FOR. ENTERTAIN ME IN WHATEVER IT IS YOU DO.

It's as far from contemporary country as you can get and still be considered country. I've never heard him on the radio except for XM every now and then, but he still has a huge following.

I care for very few female singers but don't mind her. She was with Willie Nelson (liberal) and Sturgill Simpson when they came to Raleigh and I enjoyed her live.

The karencentric puff-piece at the top of the thread presents Jason Isbel as some sort of High Priest of the "The Mother Church of Country Music", what with his ever-expanding Annual Pilgrimage to the Ryman Auditorium. I'm telling you when I was there there was ZERO buzz about his holiness being on the cusp of returning.

I've listened to some of his stuff now just because of this thread, and he's as big a "woe-is-me" downer as Kurt Cobain or Billie Eillish, but with the added bonus now of thinking he'd promote his fortunes by being a for-profit race hustler. If someone likes his shtick, fine. If you feel better after self-flagellation, by all means enjoy. But if he thinks he's going to shame me without me hurling a huge FU his way, he is as mistaken as he is over-impressed with his illusions of influence. I'm not buying that he's even sincere. I'm also not buying that the "Nashville music scene", the "Nashville business community", or the "Nashville street" or anyone at the Ryman cares one wit about him. Not at all.
