The past two days were not much better than Wednesday. The only way to alleviate the achiness in his shoulders and the headache was to lay flat. He could only get up to use the bathroom, and every time he did that he would get sick. Since the headache was positional (had it when he sat up, went away when he laid down), they determined it was a post lumbar spinal headache. On the positive side, it is unrelated to the chemo. On the negative side, it is completely debilitating and the worse kind of headache you can have.

On Thursday, they increased his IV fluids, gave him blood, and started him on caffeine pills. None of these worked. Yesterday they gave him an IV caffeine drip and changed his nausea medicine because the nausea medicine he was taking can also cause headaches and the doctors didn’t want anything else factoring in. He was able to sit up a little more yesterday and could go to the bathroom without getting sick. He was able to get on the computer a little and ate a little. However, it did not completely alleviate the symptoms. He didn’t sleep well last night and switched from the chair to the bed halfway through the night.

So far today they have given him another IV caffeine drip as well as Gabapentin and Tramadol. The doctors are hopeful that this will work. If it does not, they will send him for an MRI tomorrow to see if he is leaking spinal fluid where they did the lumbar puncture. If he is leaking spinal fluid they will highly consider doing what is known as an epidural blood patch. These are very effective but doctors are hesitant to do them with leukemia patients because there is a risk of introducing cancerous cells into the spinal fluid. On the brighter side, the doctor did remove the finger sticks since his sugar levels returned to normal. His platelet level is also increasing every day. His were at 113 today. The doctor said that since most of the cancer has been wiped out, his bone marrow is able to produce these cells again. Thank you for all of the prayers and support. Although he is having some difficulties, God is listening and working in his body. Please pray that the medications today will work and will alleviate his headache.

I feel terrible for him and you, but I am hopeful that this will be all behind you quickly.

Thank you for the update! I read these aloud to my wife. She doesn't know Jerek, but she is a med-surg nurse and shows interest in not only his treatments, but his day to day happenings.

As someone that's had 50+ lumbar punctures, I can understand a part of these issues. Blood clot in my brain at 5, lumbar shunt installed, and 30+ surgeries since then...all related to spinal fluid.

Prayers are definitely with all of you.

As someone that has never had any illnesses my sympathies go out to him. I can't fathom going through the symptoms and issues as you describe them. Tell him we're still praying daily and will continue to do so until things are level again.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write updates for this anonymous group of folks.
My heart aches for you guys as you battle through this. I'm very thankful that you share with us. I hope you feel us carrying the weight along with you because we are. It's amazing to me how tight-knit this group can be...

I can't imagine anyone messing with my spine that much, more power to him.

Hope they balance everything out and get him more comfortable.

Thank you Caitlin...please send him more high fives from all of us.

Lord, We ask that you give the Dr the right combination of drugs and such to remove these headaches and we ask that you allow the Dr's work to bring him back while and healthy.

Amen.

Pray unceasing. This young man is on my mind daily.

Please let us know when we need to hit the prayer closet hard.

Thanks for the update. You guys keep your heads up. I know it's been hard on you too, watching someone you love go through hell to get to the other side. I went through it with my dad, he had esohageal cancer years ago. Stay strong, and lean on your loved ones for support.

Glad everything is moving toward a positive note!!! Yay Jerek!

Thanks for the update, I can say from experience a headache due to a spinal leakage is on a whole different level than anything that most have experienced.

So hard to read about one of our own going through so much hurt. Prayers to you all...

Thank you for sharing with us. Jerek, you and the children are in our thoughts and prayers. We are hoping for continued improvement and relief from side effects. Virtual high fives and hugs from ours to yours.

I am fortunate to have some Christian Warriors amongst my friends. They and their congregations are on this daily. This man WILL get better. We can have it no other way.

I had a spinal leak due to a lumbar puncture/myelogram. It was a miserable four days. I feel his pain in that regard
