Hello Everybody,
I moved from Flagstaff, AZ to Efland a few months ago with my family (wife of 15 years, three young boys, and a 2 year old English setter. I had just gotten the dog trained and effective at hunting quail, and two of my boys were old enough to carry a shotgun in the field without shooting one another . . . and then we moved. We are still hopeful to find some hidden quail or grouse out here in NC and we don’t mind putting in the miles exploring.
Anyways, I have shot, owned, collected and fixed up firearms since I bought my first rifle on my 18th birthday ( Remington 700 BDL in 30.06). I have a soft spot for old Browning 22s and Superposed, and am working on putting together a set of “essentials” for each of my boys. We are glad to be on a few acres in NC and look forward to exploring the land and meeting new friends.
Cheers,
Bill

@wmthomasson,

Welcome to the CFF family!

Welcome to NC! Great looking dog you have there. My dog, pictured to the left, can only hunt a tennis ball. Preferably a Penn.

Some really great quail hunting in SC where I grew up. Spent my youth hunting quail, dove and rabbits. And the occasional deer.

Welcome to the forum. I got to ask though, why the move to NC? You’re definitely leaving a lot of freedoms behind in AZ.

Hello from Raleigh, I escaped LI NY in 1990. You're going to like it here on CFF.

Welcome from WNC, I myself left AZ in 2014. Chandler, AZ to be precise

Welcome, we're happy to have you with us.

Job and house . . . we had been trying to buy a house in Flagstaff for a long time. It went from "hard to do" to "never going to happen" once California started to move in. In the last two years or so, half the houses on our street were bought by Californians for way over asking price. And another chunk were second/summer homes for rich Phoenix people. Flagstaff home inventory is pretty much capped since building is extremely limited (smack in the middle of largest ponderosa pine forest in the country with a very liberal local gov). We paid less to buy 2.5 acres and a 4BR house out here in Efland (which was still a hard pill to swallow) than we would have to buy a 2BR condo in Flagstaff. Things just lined up and felt like the door was being opened for us so we went.

I am missing the wide open space for sure. We could drive 30 minutes in any direction, pull off the road, jump a wire fence and have millions of state-land acres to explore. Not going to get that out here . . . definitely will be an adjustment. I am used to putting in 15-20 hard miles a day chasing birds, javelina, deer and elk . . . now I have a tree stand in my back yard that I can just sit in . . .

Pros and cons for sure, but with three young boys having a few acres to our own sure is nice.

Fair enough, I definitely get the housing market issue; Californians are buying them all up with cash after unloading their houses to flee that state. We just moved to AZ back in January and since we’re only going to be here for 3yrs we just rented.

So far I love it here, it’s a outdoor paradise. I can load some guns up in my SxS and drive out to the desert and just spend all day. Riding around and shooting, with millions of acres to explore on. Only compliant right now is how hot it’s getting, so my desert activities have become an early morning trip or they have to wait for the cooler months.

Welcome!

I'm a Winslow, Az native but live in SC now.

Flagstaff sure isnt what it used to be in the 1960's & 70's....
Its is overloaded with foolish liberals and the area will run out of water in the not too distant future. That should make the cost of living go up even more when water has to be hauled in by truck or train.

Yeah, we ended up renting the entire 9 years we were in Flagstaff. What area of the state are you in? I grew up down in Tucson and know some pretty cool spots around the state to check out. We used to camp down in the SE corner of the state in the Chiricahua Mountains, right past the tree where Johnny Ringo was killed (maybe by Wyatt Earp) and is buried. The heat is hard, but I'd take the dry heat over this humidity and its not even that humid yet.

In probably the hottest, driest hell hole in AZ….Yuma. Lol and yes, even as hot as it is here, it beats humidity all day.

That description of Yuma is accurate, but the Dove hunting is second only to Argentina. There are grills around that you can take your whole limit of Dove to and they will turn them into tacos for you while you drink beer.

I’ve been hearing about how good this dove hunting is, but I haven’t heard about those grills yet. Sound awesome, I may need to pick up dove hunting while I’m here.

Welcome! I have a brother in Glendale AZ who has live in the Phoenix area for 60+ years. Beautiful country around Flagstaff but sucks about the Californian's. My wife and I spent a week in Williams about 15 years back; great folks and pretty country (although not a lot of water...)

Enjoy NC! Lots of great folks here; just a little more humid than you're used to but the winters are milder here too. Efland isn't a bad area either.

Hello Everybody,

Oh man, it would be hard to leave Flag. What a beautiful place, and glad you're here!
I'm from NM so I understand the adjustment to Hot Hazy and Humid, but you'll get there.

Welcome!
