We were sitting around trying to decide what to do today and decided to head to the coast for a couple of days. The only place that we could find to stay is in Shallotte. We have heard that the drum and speckled trout fishing is good around Oak Island to South Port now. Do you folks have any suggestions on where to put in?
Thanks,
-Len

That sounds like a BLAST!!!!!

Where to put your head: LaPolena B&B in Southport.
Where to put your fork: Either Olivers or Fishy Fish

........may not be what you were looking for regarding response(s), but thought I would toss a few recommendations out there since you'll need to sleep and eat at some point.

Enjoy!!!

I spoke with Suzy at LaPolena B&B, but they are full this weekend. Next time! I appreciate the recommendations!.

Any fishing suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I think the easiest place to start Kayak fishing at Oak Island would be the marshes of the Elizabeth River. You can put in at the Wildlife Ramp off Fish Factory Road and paddle across the waterway to the marshes. Those marshes both east and west of the nuclear outflow canal are good. The east side has more water. You can get away from the boat wakes up in those marshes.

The waterway behind oak island on the south end has an oyster shell bottom, I used to drift it bouncing finger mullet off the bottom Carolina rigged and caught drum left and right this time of year.

Spent a week trying to kayak fish there this summer. I didn’t catch a thing. Wife caught a flounder we couldn’t keep. Using live shrimp as bait. We put in at the kayak launch on OI, the boat ramp on OI, and the boat ramp across the bridge towards Southport. It was crazy hot though and rained a bunch. I blame that over my lack of fishing knowledge for our lack of luck.

You and I, we are the same

I fish down there alot and never catch anything, I thought it was about centering your soul and whatnot.....

That is why I usually link to Cpt Ian's videos, he actually catches stuff. I have a spot or two I love but have never caught anything its just a great paddle.

I have not been able to fish any lately, but my brother has been fishing quite a bit in the marshes lately. He likes to fish the very high tides on the short grass flats with a fly rod for tailing red fish and has seen quite a few lately. The good fishing season is just starting.

Good luck. Haven't fished that area.
Was up around Beaufort Thursday, undersize flounder, baby grouper, croaker, and 100+ lizard fish.

We spent some time on the water earlier today and managed to catch some croaker. Our youngest missed a huge hit. We may try the point on foot this evening.
What’s for bait? If you can catch live mullet it opens up a lot more opportunities

Initially we were tossing gulp and soft plastics. In retrospect we should have brought the cast net, but were pretty hurried getting out the door.

Last night we went to the point and caught some nice speckled trout and black drum. There we were using shrimp on a fish finder rig and a rattle trap. It was a beautiful night.
I am amazed with the tidal action here. When it goes out, it goes out quick!

I used to fish with a guy down there that had a decent sized Grady white, on out going tide on the south end near the point, we would start at one of the channel markers, turn the boat sideways and drift, only using the outboard for steering. Every time we did we would catch reds 30-40” bouncing mullet off the bottom while drifting. And I mean two and three at a time depending on how many folks were on the boat. Was always hectic but some of my best memories of fishing inshore.
