Ken Hackathorn on 9x19mm Pocket Rockets

And here I thought you just bought a pistol, trained with FMJ, shot a few JHP's to make sure the gun would cycle them, and then carry the JHP's. Damnation! Where am I going to get ballistic gel to see if my ammo will penetrate sufficiently? Or is firing a few rounds through a chronograph enough to determine whether the speed is ok?

Most JHPs have a velocity window in which they perform optimally. The ammo manufacturer should be able to tell you what that is so that you can compare it to chronograph readings.

Interesting read. 147 grain standard pressure has become my go to load. It seems to preform even in short barreled guns.

In light of the handful of terrorist attacks we have seem it does seem prudent to rethink an EDC gun for certain situations and play the odds. I have small sub compact 9mm that I shoot ok, but really wouldn't want that in a situation with a well armed bad guy(s). I'd rather have one of my larger gun with more capacity or better accuracy at distance. So if I was the kind of guy to hang out at malls, night clubs or large crowded areas that might be a target I'd want a bigger gun. If I am going to the local church I might be ok with my sub compact. I kniw it is odds and guess work. The bad guys might decide to raid the church with AK's, but I am unable to predict that. So I play the odds a little. I like carry my officer size 1911 a lot. 7 rounds out of a 3.5" barrel probably wouldn't be great in a real bad place. Even with another 6-7 in a spare mag. But it is comfortable, and in most cases I am good. Ideally we would all have lifestyles, jobs and clothing where we could carry full size gun with 3 mags and a rifle close by. Unfortunately that isn't the case for many of us.

Long ramble over. Sorry!
