Well just about finished building. This is a Traditions Kentucky Rifle kit. It was a good learning kit. I decide on browning the barrel instead of regular bluing. Glad I did. I like it a lot. It was the first attempt at browning and it came out pretty good. Setting the lock was fairly simple. Had to do some carving of the wood, but nothing major. One problem I did have was drilling the tenons for the pins. The first one (there are two) went fine. I screwed up the second (measurement was off) and had to cut a new one out of some bar stock that I had.

It is a cheap kit and because of that the wood was not great. First off the butt stock that came in the kit was cracked. The company did send a replacement right away. There were no cracks in this one but the wood in itself was worse.

Any ideas on how to put a more modern butt plate on it? Mine has that same curved piece and I know it's period correct and works with period correct shooting methods... but I wouldn't mind it not being a (physical) pain to try to fire it like a modern rifle.

That has never bothered me. I shoot a lot of muskets .69 caliber and have quite a few Russian Mosins. So I am use to steel on the shoulder.
