I just got an automatic knife and was wondering what maintenance and lubrication, if any should be performed on it? I've never done much at all to any of my other pocket knives. Of course I don't own any that are worth more than $30! Except for my new auto.

I had dinner with one of the guys from Microtech Knives the other day. He was handling another friend's UTX and commented on it being "slow".

His recommendation was an air hose followed by a liberal soaking with Rem Oil and several firings while it's soaked. Then let it drip dry or another quick air hose blast before carrying to avoid gathering pocket lint.

I air hose and then a touch of dry lube. Knives get used for cutting stuff to eat, so I also have a habit of wiping the blade before such use.

Starting at a very young age I would cut food into bite sized pieces. To this day I won’t just bite into an apple, peach or pear, although I will sometimes make an exception for a plum. None of that was my point though, my point was that all synthetic lubricants have a vile taste, so use them sparingly. If you’re using a folding knife a lot for food and cleaning it frequently, maybe better to use vegetable oil as it has little flavor.

I prefer a fixed blade for most food work, but sometimes all I’ve got is a folder.

There is a specific lube for bearings that you should be using, Ardent Bearing Lube. It's sometimes marketed as other names but is always made by Ardent. Specific formula stiff enough to stay where it's put without going gummy.

I use olive oil on mine for this reason.
